Players eagerly awaiting Season 5 of Call of Duty: Warzone finally know just when their patience will be rewarded. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare's popular battle royale mode has become the premiere Call of Duty experience in 2020, spinning off into its own executable and continually updating with new characters, weapons, and map tweaks. Most recently, the game launched an experimental mode that supported 200 players, doubling the standard count for many battle royales on the market. While that was a temporary addition, it's possible it could return in future seasons on a more permanent basis thanks to the heavily rumored expansion of the map in Season 5.

There are several other rumors regarding possible additions to Call of Duty: Warzone in the upcoming season. One is a "loot train", similar to the vehicle currently circling the badlands in Apex Legends. Players will be able to land on the train or bust in during gameplay to secure the rarest guns and perks but also risk losing their lives to campers just out of sight. Also possibly included in Season 5 is an in-game event to set of changes like the loot train. This would likely take the form of a nuclear explosion, keying off of the franchise's penchant for the device on popular multiplayer map Nuketown.

Earlier today, Call of Duty: Warzone developers Infinity Ward dropped a brief teaser video to popular Twitch streamer NICKMERCS (thanks, Everything Sports & Gaming). The video does seemingly confirm one of the rumored Season 5 inclusions, as it features a shot from the cabin of a train. A helicopter flies by and the train honks at them, ending the all-too-brief glimpse into the new season. However, NICKMERCS estimates that the numbers in the fringes of the footage hint towards the update premiering on August 5, possibly in the morning or late evening.

Activision generally wouldn't waste an opportunity to promote one of their biggest properties on a grand stage, so it's no surprise that between now and the rumored release date, Xbox has their E3-tier digital showcase. While Call of Duty has been paired with Sony all throughout the previous generation, it's possible that Microsoft struck a new marketing deal to secure the long-running franchise for the Xbox Series X. While it's impossible to say for certain if Season 5 of Warzone have a showing during Microsoft's event, the timing of this tease does seem to indicate that a greater reveal is coming sooner rather than later.

While the rumored features of Call of Duty: Warzone are definitely exciting, there's also a feeling of playing catchup. Everything noteworthy in the rumors is taken from other games, a copy of strategies seen with other Activision titles like World of Warcraft. There's nothing wrong with establishing new genre standards, but here's hoping that Call of Duty: Warzone takes a chance on something new in its next season. Developer innovation led to the creation of the battle royale genre in the first place, and it's the only way that each entry in the genre can differentiate itself and cultivate a unique fanbase.
