Season Four of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare releases tonight and will be another large download in a long string of them. A trailer for Season Four debuted at the end of May, ramping up excitement among the Call of Duty community. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare released in 2007 with a campaign introducing cast of characters that became series favorites. Even before the first glimpse of the modern reboot’s fourth season was given, one of those beloved characters has been teased to return.

The game has remained consistent with offering new multiplayer modes and patches since its release in late 2019, including the coveted Duos playlist. Trials are another craved aspect of the game, and the feature made an appearance in a recent update, showing that developer Infinity Ward is actively listening to and acting on fans' wishes. This year, Call of Duty: Warzone battle royale component launched as free-to-play without requiring ownership of Modern Warfare to participate, so players of each half of the game have been hotly anticipating Season 4 - especially after it was delayed to make room for the BLM protests.

The wait for Season Four is almost over, with Infinity Ward confirming via Twitter that the update is rolling out "tonight, June 10th @ 11PM PDT." Ashton Williams - Infinity Ward’s Communications Manager - also took to Twitter to add that Season Four’s file size is "going to be large." Williams went on to explain that Infinity Ward is “compressing a bunch of assets,” meaning the update should “only take up an additional 4GB on consoles for all of the new content.”

In response to Season Four’s download size, Call of Duty fans have conveyed a variety of comments. Some have offered ideas on how to further reduce Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone’s file sizes while others have gone the snarky route, such as one commenter who said, “Mark the date people, this is the day Infinity Ward discovered file compression.” Among the suggestions and retorts, some members of the community have also expressed support and appreciation for the developer’s attempt to reduce file sizes where they can.

Since Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s launch, gamers have complained about its high file size, which has been absurd and hasn't been limited to just the base game, but updates, as well. While these gripes have mostly been voiced by console players, PC gamers have similarly expressed concern about the same issue. Infinity Ward has addressed players’ concerns, and has taken steps to remedy the issue, though the problem is far from resolved. With SSDs coming native in next-gen consoles, perhaps file sizes will be less of an issue, but only time will tell.
