Netflix released the Warrior Nun TV show trailer, based on a popular comic book series. The story will revolve around a 19-year-old woman, played by Alba Baptista, who wakes up in a morgue with new powers and a divine artifact embedded in her back. She soon discovers that she is now part of an ancient order that has been tasked with fighting demons, with the forces of heaven and hell trying to pull her in different directions. The show was created by Simon Barry, who is best known for his work on the time-travel show Continuum.

The original independent comic book series, Warrior Nun Areala, was first released in 1994. Created by Ben Dunn, the manga-style American series follows Sister Shannon Masters, a Warrior Nun from a fictional branch of the Catholic Church. There have been attempts to create an anime series that never launched. The story was also in the process of being adapted into a feature film, but there have not been any further developments since 2015. It was finally announced in 2018 that Netflix would move forward with a TV series adaptation.

The Warrior Nun TV show stars Baptista as Ava, Kristina Tonteri-Young as Sister Beatrice, Tristán Ulloa as Father Vincent, Lorena Andrea  as Sister Lilith, Thekla Reuten as Jillian Salvius, and Toya Turner as Shotgun Mary. Barry serves as the showrunner, and also executive produces the series alongside Jet Wilkinson and Stephen Hegyes. The show was filmed throughout Spain. The upcoming first season will comprise of 10 episodes.

Warrior Nun's "hero gets introduced to a secret world she never knew existed" premise is a familiar one to fans of the genre, and usually makes for a fun binge. Ava will learn more about this new world right alongside the audience. The young woman destined to fight demons and stave off evil also is reminiscent of shows like Buffy. Similar to the comics, the Roman Catholic Church and elements of religion also seem to play a big part throughout.

Netflix has already adapted a range of different comics into original TV series. The MCU shows like Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Jessica Jones are perhaps the most prominent ones. The Netflix-Marvel shows, however, revolved around heroes and comic book characters who were already pretty well known. Warrior Nun will introduce the property to millions of viewers who were unfamiliar with it prior, similar to when Netflix helped popularize The Umbrella Academy after adapting it into a show. Warrior Nun will be available for streaming on July 2.
