Frontier Developments is partnering with Games Workshop to create an all-new video game based off of the Warhammer: Age of Sigmar series. Frontier Developments has worked on games in all sorts of genres in the past, from the popular spaceship simulator Elite: Dangerous to the slightly less intense Planet Zoo and Planet Coaster titles.

Frontier Developments is also the team behind Jurassic World Evolutiona game which tasked players with creating their own versions of the iconic dinosaur theme park featured in the newest Jurassic Park sequels. The game received generally positive reviews from critics but many fans complained of a lack of variety, easy-to-master gameplay mechanics, and a general absence of emotion from the dinosaurs, the human attendees, and the game itself. Now, it looks like Frontier Developments is ready to switch genres once again.

As reported by Eurogamer, the announcement that Frontier Developments is working with Games Workshop on a Warhammer: Age of Sigmar game was located in an investor relations message on their official website. According to the IP license, the project is planned to be "a real-time strategy game worldwide on PC, console, and streaming platforms for release in FY23," which means players could see the game anywhere between June 1st 2022 and May 31st 2023.

The report also mentions another upcoming title from Frontier Developments, a Formula 1 racing management game, is set to release in 2023 as well. Frontier's CEO, David Braben, spoke about their new licensing deal with Games Workshop and how excited he was to create a game in the universe of Warhammer: Age of Sigmar, saying "it's great news that two such well-established and world-class creative UK companies with a global reach are collaborating on a new project." Braben adds that his company is looking forward to working closely with the people at Games Workshop, and that they hope to "bring the rich world of Warhammer Age of Sigmar to a wide audience through an immersive and accessible real-time strategy game on both PC and console."

There are no shortage of games based in the Warhammer universe, from first-person action titles like Warhammer Vermintide 2 and the FPS franchise spin-off Space Hulk: Death Wing to turn-based titles like Total War: Warhammer. While Frontier Developments' previous assortment of titles like Planet Zoo and Elite: Dangerous don't really give much of an indication of what the gameplay of this new Warhammer: Age of Sigmar game could entail, it will be interesting to see what liberties they decide to take with the license. There's a lot of time between now and this new game's release, and hopefully Frontier Developments will use it wisely.
