Marvel is expanding the lore of Warhammer 40K with a new comic series.  After the success of the previous Warhammer 40,ooo series, it isn't surprising that Marvel would provide fans with more. This time, the focus will not be on a single legendary figure, but a group of warriors.

Warhammer 40K, short for Warhammer 40,000, is a miniature wargame from 1987 that has grown into the most popular miniature wargame in the world. Its increased popularity has led to the release of additional games, novels, and comics. The story of Warhammer 40K takes place in a future where humans are at war with supernatural beings, aliens, and other human factions. Wars are fought between these different groups using magic and technology.

Marvel Comics has announced an upcoming miniseries set in the world of Warhammer 40,000. Warhammer 40,000: Sisters of Battle is an upcoming five-issue miniseries. Written by Torunn Grǿnbekk with art by Edgar Salazar and colorist Arif Prianto, this series will follow the Adepta Sororitas, a warrior sisterhood, led by Canoness Veridyan. The Adepta Sororitas and their leader Veridyan were introduced in the Codex: Sisters of Battle expansion for the game. Now, they will also be getting their own Warhammer comic series.

The series summary is as follows:

A squad of Adepta Sororitas, led by Canoness Veridyan arrive on planet Siscia to retrieve a lost Inquisitorial acolyte and put down a heretical uprising. As Novitiate Ghita's first mission with her Order gets underway, what should be an easy mission turns into something much worse, as an unknown force deep within the subterranean city of the planet rears its ugly head! It's no-holds-barred action, mystery, and daemons galore as the all-female fighting force lets bolters blaze and flamers scorch in this all-new saga!

Previously, Marvel published Warhammer 40,000: Marneus Calgar, a five-issue miniseries that told the origin story of one of the legendary figures in Warhammer's mythos. This series brought bloody battles, showcasing Marneus' difficult training and medical enhancements to become an Ultramarine. Eventually, he became Chapter Master of the Ultramarines Space Chapter, proving his skills. Now, Marvel is ready to bring fans of Warhammer 40K a new story focused on different characters. The Adepta Sororitas are a female sector of the Imperium of Man's church, the Adeptus Ministorum. The militant group associated with the Adepta Sororitas is known as the Sisters of Battle, which this new series will focus on.

This announcement comes shortly after Warhammer Fest Online, an event providing details about the newest releases for the main game and other components of it, including novels. While this comic was not part of those announcements, a new codex and miniature line for the Adepta Sororitas was. Collectively, this is a good pairing as long-time fans of this particular group can expand their knowledge of lore involving them, and new readers have the chance to get attached to a Warhammer group that has had a new line released should they decide to try the game. Marvel has emphasized that this lore-expanding series will be a good starting point for those unfamiliar with Warhammer 40,000, while also being a "delight" for long-time fans, opening a sort of gateway to bridge comic and game fans. Warhammer 40,000: Sisters of Battle will release August 18, 2021.
