Blizzard launched the first game in its Warcraft game series, Warcraft: Orcs & Humans, over twenty years ago. Though not the first real-time strategy game to offer multiplayer, the game is largely responsible for the widespread multiplayer facets that defined the genre in the 1990s. Warcraft has been omnipresent in gaming ever since, with multiple strategy games and the enduringly popular Massively Multiplayer Online game World of Warcraft.

When the upcoming Warcraft movie was first announced by Legendary Pictures back in 2006, it came as a surprise to no one.  However, the project was vast in scope and coupled with tight creative control by Blizzard Entertainment, it took nearly eight years for filming to finally begin. Fans patiently awaited the adaptation, receiving only the occasional teaser image for their patience. However, now that the film is less than a year away, fans can expect to be seeing much more from the upcoming blockbuster.

Case in point, Legendary Pictures has just released two San Diego Comic-Con 2015 exclusives posters for the upcoming film.  One features Travis Fimmel (Vikings) as Sir Anduin Lothar, the noble knight at the head of the human army. The other features Toby Kebbell (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) as Durotan, the fearsome Orc Chieftain battling to save his family and his people.

Official details about the upcoming Warcraft film are relatively scarce, though that is expected to change at the Legendary Pictures 2015 Comic-Con Panel. For now all that is certain is that Durotan and Lothar are both considered protagonists in the film.

It can be assumed from the game lore that Durotan will be fighting corruption amongst the Orcs just as readily as he'll be battling the human army. Additionally, in his poster Lothar appears to be in mourning as ashes fall from his hands. That might be a hint at things to come for the human empire.

The most interesting thing about the upcoming Warcraft film is that the humans aren't necessarily the protagonists. The film looks to be taking the same route that Dawn of the Planet of the Apes took, providing insights into both sides of the conflict and showcasing heroes and villains in both armies. Rather than have a simple story of good versus evil, the characters in the film will be painted in more realistic shades of grey, according to co-writer/director Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code).

Rounding out the Warcraft cast are Paula Patton (Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol), Dominic Cooper (Agent Carter), Ruth Negga (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Ben Foster (Lone Survivor), Robert Kazinsky (Pacific Rim), and Clancy Brown (The Flash). More details about the upcoming Warcraft film are expected to drop soon. We'll keep you updated as new information becomes available.
