The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is notable for the fact that it takes place in the Second Age of Middle-earth. Thus, though it includes several of the most beloved characters from The Lord of the Rings, there are several who, as of yet, have not appeared and there are also some who won’t appear at all (since they have not been born).

In both cases, it’s worth drawing attention to those individuals from the later series that would fit into the world of The Rings of Power. Regardless of whether they are Elf, Man, Hobbit, or Dwarf, they would certainly add something unique to Amazon’s blockbuster series.

Thorin

Thorin Oakenshield standing in an open field in The Hobbit

Thorin is one of the best heroes in Jackson’s various movies. Brooding and domineering and noble, he is a perfect epic hero. As a result of these characteristics, he would definitely fit into the world of the Dwarves as it is depicted in The Rings of Power.

In particular, it would be fascinating to see how he would interact with the other members of his kind who populate the Khazad-dûm. What’s more, given his well-known and often-expressed antipathy toward any and all Elves, he would be a wild card in the relationship between the two races in the Second Age.

Thranduil

Thranduil looking serious in The Hobbit

Lee Pace is a very skilled actor, and he brings out a remarkable number of layers in Thranduil. Though he might be arrogant and cold, there is still no question that he is committed to fighting back against the forces of evil.

He isn’t as illustrious as Elves like Galadriel or Gil-galad, and for this reason, it would be fascinating to see how he would interact with these other great powers in Middle-earth. Just as importantly, it would also be interesting to see how he interacts with the various powerful Dwarves that inhabit the Second Age.

Legolas

There’s no question Legolas is one of the best characters in Lord of the Rings. With his effortless heroism and Orlando Bloom’s innate charisma, he is an iconic hero. He would fit very well into the milieu of The Rings of Power, when heroism will come to be in very high demand as Sauron begins to show himself once again and to cast a shadow over Middle-earth.

More than anything else, it would be a delight for many viewers to see Legolas in action once again, with his formidable fighting skills once again on abundant display in battle.

Celeborn

Celeborn and Galadriel standing in Lothlorien

Though Galadriel is one of the most powerful characters in The Lord of the Rings, she rules over Lothlorien with the aid of her consort, Celeborn. As of now, there has been no announcement that this character will appear yet in The Rings of Power. He would, nevertheless, make a great addition.

In particular, it would be fascinating to see exactly what he was getting up to at the time that Galadriel was pursuing her war against Sauron and rebelling against the restrictions of her own kind as well as those of the Men of Numenor.

Theoden

Théoden and his men prepare for the Battle of Helms Deep in The Two Towers

Many formidable warriors inhabit The Lord of the Rings, and few are quite as respected and beloved as King Theoden. A man of honor and dignity, he is a king who will always put the well-being of his people above almost every other consideration.

Thus, it makes sense that he would be one of the characters who would fit in very well with the ethos of The Rings of Power. In fact, it would be very fascinating to see how his code of honor would fit with both the Men who currently inhabit Middle-earth, as well as those of Numenor.

Denethor

Denethor scowling in Lord of the Rings

Few Lord of the Rings characters are as tragic as Denethor. Driven mad by despair and over the death of his son Boromir, he is the saga’s painful vision of what Men can become when they give into the worst parts of their nature.

However, this is precisely what would make him such an excellent addition to The Rings of Power. He would fit in particularly well with the people of Numenor, who are equally deluded about their own role in the world and their relationship with the Elves. It would be particularly fascinating to see how his despair would fit into the Numenoreans’ fear of death.

Aragorn

Aragorn confronts the Army of the Dead in The Lord of the Rings

Aragorn is, of course, one of the bravest of the characters in The Lord of the Rings. Though he is, of course, of Numenorean descent himself, he is very different from them in that he clearly has a strong allegiance to the Elves.

Thus, it would be very exciting to see him interact with the people of the island nation as they are depicted in The Rings of Power. There’s no doubt that he would not simply stand by while characters like Pharazon continue to poison the minds of the people against their immortal counterparts.

Boromir

Boromir at the Council of Elrond in Fellowship of the Ring

Boromir, like his father, is someone who cares deeply about Gondor. Unfortunately, also like his father, his devotion to their well-being leads him to make some very poor decisions, and he comes to believe that controlling the Ring is key to the success of all efforts to fight back against Sauron.

Given that this is one of Sean Bean’s best roles, many fans would no doubt rejoice to see him in The Rings of Power. As either an ally or a foe of the rulers of Numenor, he would be a formidable warrior and an asset to whoever was fortunate enough to have him on their side.

Gimli

The Dwarves have already made themselves well-known as a presence in The Rings of Power. Gimli is, of course, a beloved character from The Lord of the Rings, and though he is often used for comic relief, there is also something very noble about him.

It would be particularly rewarding to see him in The Rings of Power, not just because he would offer his usual mix of dignity and laughs but also because he would finally get to see the great Dwarf kingdom before it gained its sinister and dark reputation. It would be worth it just to see the look on his face as he regards the majesty of what they were able to accomplish.

Gollum

Gollum looking hopeful in The Lord of the Rings trilogy

Gollum is unquestionably one of Andy Serkis’ best roles, and he remains a marvel of motion capture technology. He is also a deeply tragic character. Since he is also of Hobbit-like nature, he would definitely fit in with the Harfoots.

Should his backstory be explored, it would be particularly exciting to see how these loving people might very well turn against one of their own if he were revealed to be the kind of person that Gollum would eventually turn into. It would also add a further layer to the tragic nature of his overall story.
