Like many fans, WandaVision star Elizabeth Olsen thought Evan Peters' introduction as Quicksilver was an X-Men crossover event. The MCU's first Disney+ series had plenty of twists and turns up its sleeve, including the introduction of Agatha Harkness and Monica Rambeau coming into her powers. One of the most exciting twists, though, came at the end of episode five, "On A Very Special Episode..."

As Wanda's world started to crumble and Vision started to suspect something wasn't right with Westview, a last-minute reveal turned everything on its head. Peters' long-rumored casting was revealed and he showed up to Wanda and Vision's house as Pietro Maximoff, Wanda's long-dead twin, but this time he looked different. Darcy Lewis even remarked that Wanda had "recast" Pietro and, for several episodes, fans waited for a reveal that Peters was playing his version of Quicksilver from the X-Men films.

WandaVision fans know by now that Peters' "Fietro" was a big fake-out, but even the show's star didn't know that at first. Olsen told Variety that when she found out about Peters' casting, she, too, assumed that this meant that Marvel was bringing on board characters from the X-Men universe. Olsen says her "mind was blown" when she found out about the casting, expressing excitement at the true merging of the two studios. Olsen says she became even more excited when found out about the other twist and that seems to be where her reaction and fans' differ.

When we heard that Evan was going to do it, my mind was blown. ’This is the first time we’re merging! This is crazy!’ And then to use it in such a clever way as [showrunner] Jac [Schaeffer] does was so satisfying. Working with Evan playing this version of Pietro was just so fun and weird and funny…Jac, I loved it so much. I’m so grateful for that.

Ralph Bohner takes Monica captive in WandaVision

It is eventually revealed in WandaVision's final episode that Peters is not playing the X-Men universe's Quicksilver, but another mysterious character entirely. With Agatha controlling this version of Quicksilver, fans began to suspect something was up, but the eventual reveal that it was a bit of trick casting on the part of Marvel was a big letdown for many. Peters was revealed to be a Westview resident named Ralph and not a Multiverse-hopping superhero as many people thought.

Now, it seems fans will have to wait until at least December, when Spider-Man: No Way Home premieres, to see the true beginning of the Multiverse. Wanda will then have to deal with that alongside the Sorcerer Supreme in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. All of this portends big things for the MCU, but whether the stunt casting of Peters was a good choice or not is still being debated by fans. WandaVision ultimately proved to be divisive and Peters' casting is one of the primary reasons for that, but the series sticking to Wanda's personal journey seems to be the right choice in the end.
