WandaVision has been the most hotly debated new series of the year, and one of the most hotly debated characters in it is Monica Rambeau. Introduced as a child in the first Captain Marvel, she’s now a S.W.O.R.D. agent (played by Candyman’s Teyonah Parris) who faces off against Wanda herself.

Parris spoke to Screen Rant about the fan reception, Marvel theories, and her next appearance in Captain Marvel 2.

What has that been like to see fans' response to Monica Rambeau, and have you heard any favorite fan theory that stuck out to you?

Teyonah Parris: It's been so fun to see grown-up Monica get launched into this world of WandaVision, and just seeing how the fans have been so kind and receptive. Which is definitely a huge shout out to the creatives, our director, our head writer, and our producers who have created this very fully-fledged, three-dimensional character. It's been really exciting to just watch grown-up Monica come into WandaVision.

The theories? I don't want to say which ones are crazy to me, because someone is gonna take that and say, "This is right or wrong." So, I'm not gonna speak on that. But I do love to read them. I think they're so interesting. That and the Easter eggs; some of this stuff is like, "Okay, that's comic number 242. And this is what happens in it." I'm like, "How do y'all know that?" So, it's really fun to see the Easter eggs and theories and all of that.

Monica's story sort of parallels Wanda's, with both being snapped away and then having to come back five years later to grief. Was that something that you consciously were aware of, or did the directors do anything deliberate to emphasize those parallels?

Teyonah Parris: The parallel that Monica is experiencing having lost her mom while she was blipped away, and then the parallel of Wanda grieving Vision - that was very clear in the scripts from the very beginning and something we talked about. And I just think it's been really beautiful to watch these two women emphasize; to watch Monica empathize with what Wanda is going through and still have some friction, because she has a job to do as well.

Just watching that conflict has been exciting, but that parallel - both of them having lost someone - is what connects Monica to Wanda.

Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau in WandaVision

Carol Danvers was brought up in episode 5 and Monica didn't seem too happy to hear her name mentioned. Are fans on the right track of thinking there's some kind of tension between them? Can we expand on that in Captain Marvel 2, or will we find more about that in WandaVision?

Teyonah Parris: There was a reaction when Carol's name was brought up. Everybody has their own take on what that might be. I do know that I was announced to be joining Captain Marvel 2, so Monica Rambeau will be there with Iman and Brie, Captain Marvel and Ms. Marvel.

I hope that we will have the chance and the space to further explore that relationship that was set up in the first Captain Marvel and that we're kind of teasing at here. There is space for that to grow.

Monica seems really reluctant to listen to what Darcy's saying about her lab results and the dangers of the hex. Each of the last two episodes, we've touched on what's changing her when she crosses over. Will we see that explored more in future episodes?

Teyonah Parris: There is a lot more to come. I think we have talked about Monica crossing the hex twice now and what it's doing to her, so I look forward to seeing how that continues to unfold.
