WandaVision star Paul Bettany regrets joking about the fake cameo in the show. On the heels of Evan Peters' surprise arrival in Westview in episode 5,  Bettany harped about another big guest coming to the Disney+ show. This kept everyone guessing as to who it might be. And considering how WandaVision was expected to establish the multiverse in the MCU, this set high expectations for the viewers.

As WandaVision neared its ending and there were still no signs of any high-profile cameo, some became dubious about Bettany's tease, while others doubled down on their theories and held out hope that his words will come to fruition. Eventually, it's revealed that the actor was just kidding around regarding his tease; there were no other big guests and instead, he was just referring to himself playing White Vision. Not long after, Bettany admitted to his cruel joke and now he's further opening up about it in a new interview.

Speaking with The Playlist, the actor reveals that he regretted his decision to hype up the audience like that simply because a lot got invested in his promise. Citing various theories that it spawned, he realized that people would be disappointed when they found out that the big WandaVision surprise cameo he was talking about was just him all along.

I’ve had all sorts of feelings about it. Initially, it was massive regret, which was people started going because I thought it was a really funny joke and was pleased with myself. And then people were like, “Is it going to be Patrick Stewart?” And then I went, “Oh, my God, that’s a good idea. Oh, my God, people are going to be so disappointed when they realize it’s f**king me again.” [Laughs.] But in the end, I spoke to Kevin Feige about it. And he thought it was a really good joke, a really funny joke. And it didn’t backfire too much. For a second there, I was like, “Oh, no. What am have I done?” But yeah. So I had all sorts of feelings regarding that.

WandaVision Vision Episode 7

Bettany mentions Patrick Stewart, referring to the actor possibly reprising his role as Charles X. Xavier/Professor X from the previously separated X-Men universe. Since Disney acquired Fox, there's an assumption that Wanda's mutant origins from the comics will be used to introduce them in the MCU. However, claims that either Ian McKellen or Michael Fassbender would appear as Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto in WandaVision were more prevalent. This was because, in print, he's the father of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. In the end, neither of those arrived at Westview. Marvel Studios planned on bringing in Doctor Strange for a cameo, but that, too, was scrapped and in hindsight, it's all for the better as the series was able to focus on its core story which was Wanda dealing with her traumas.

Still, some didn't appreciate Bettany's joke as it led to them being disappointed. While not having any massive Marvel cameo in WandaVision was objectively the right call, there's an argument that the show had one too many red herrings that left them occupied without any real payoff. In any case, at least Bettany now knows that MCU fans are extremely dedicated, so he better not mess with them in the future.
