WandaVision can correct an issue with Scarlet Witch and Vision’s love story from Avengers: Infinity War. It was problematic that the movie started off with Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) in a romantic relationship, because how this came about was never explored onscreen, only between films.

Wanda’s romance with Vision is a vital part of Avengers: Infinity War due to his role in the battle with Thanos (Josh Brolin). Because Vision was powered by the Mind Stone, he was an obvious target for Thanos and the Black Order. The Avengers knew that one of their top priorities was to protect Vision and keep the Mad Titan and his minions from getting to him. Their mission to safeguard Vision led to a huge battle in Wakanda that ultimately resulted in a loss for the Avengers. In a heart-wrenching moment, Wanda used her powers to kill Vision and stop Thanos from getting his hands on the Mind Stone, but Thanos undid this with the Time Stone. Afterward, Thanos killed Vision himself. The character remained dead throughout Avengers: Endgame, but will somehow make a return in Disney+’s WandaVision.

It’s important to note that though their romance was integral to the movie, the MCU didn’t properly build up to it. The characters clearly had a connection in Captain America: Civil War, but they weren’t romantically involved at this point. Their relationship apparently grew from friendship into something more offscreen. Avengers: Infinity War likely skipped this because there wasn’t room for it, but WandaVision can fill in the gaps. Though it may seem to some like it’s too late for Marvel to explore the beginning of their romance, WandaVision will have a chance to show how it started through flashbacks.

Exploring the early days of their relationship feels important because what Wanda and Vision share is a love story that’s unique to the MCU, so how it happened is certainly something that needs to be shown. It was a focal point of The Avengers comics in the 1970s for the same reasons. While the two lived together in the Avengers Mansion, they slowly developed an attraction to each other. The comics also presented obstacles to their romance, with people like Quicksilver initially objecting to the idea of Wanda being involved with an android. There was also the matter of Vision’s own feelings, as he was an android who knew nothing about emotions and being human.

These elements from the comics were nixed from their MCU story but can still be addressed in the future. It could be that when WandaVision dives deeper into their relationship, the series will implement a flashback format to better explain how they got together and how they moved past the obstacles that may have kept them apart. If WandaVision were to add in this missing part of Scarlet Witch and Vision’s romance, it would greatly improve both characters’ MCU stories and provide viewers with a deeper and more meaningful understanding of their relationship.
