Scarlet Witch's apparent reality-altering powers and imminent breakdown in WandaVision could lead to her bringing Ultron back. WandaVision's fake world, Westview, has seemingly been created by Wanda changing reality around her as a means of bring Vision back from the dead, after he was killed by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. Of course, it's likely that things are even more complicated and twisty than what WandaVision has shown so far, meaning there's far more madness that could ensue, and many more surprises in store.

The return of Vision is one of WandaVision's biggest mysteries so far, given the mechanics of how it actually works, and whether or not he's truly alive again (or could be made so outside the bubble Westview exists within) remain unclear. However, he may not be the only Marvel character that Scarlet Witch brings back, even if he is the only one she does so intentionally. There are hints, for instance, that Quicksilver could return (perhaps now played by Evan Peters), but Ultron would be an altogether bigger twist.

The villain of Avengers: Age of Ultron is a key part of Scarlet Witch's past, and is responsible for her most devastating lost. That alone makes him a shadow looming over WandaVision, and when combined with the fact that one Tony Stark-created robot character has already returned, and the fact there's a lot of untapped potential with Ultron in the MCU, then it becomes an even more pertinent idea.

WandaVision Shows Parts of Scarlet Witch's Trauma Coming Into Westview

WandaVision Commercials and Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch in MCU

On the surface, Westview is Scarlet Witch's idyllic home; a quiet, unassuming American suburb that riffs on old sitcoms, presenting a time where everything is seemingly swell. Wanda has the perfect life, as she's getting the future with Vision that Thanos robbed her of, and the pair even have twins in Billy and Tommy. But WandaVision has already started to show the cracks appearing, with things glitching and going wrong in this new reality, showing moments outside of Wanda's control. Most of these appear to be linked to Scarlet Witch's trauma, with the biggest clue being the fake commercials that play in WandaVision. Not only in keeping with the form, these are all related to crucial moments from her past, and aren't exactly happy memories. So far, there have been nods to Stark Industries, which calls back to the bomb that killed her parents; Baron von Strucker, who ran the experiments that gave (or unlocked) Wanda and Pietro's abilities, and HYDRA, the organization they were experimented on by and far.

These moments are presented differently to the viewer to the regular show, since they're designed as ad-breaks, but they suggest something beyond Scarlet Witch's control breaking into her show. Since Westview is designed to be the happy ever after Wanda and Vision, then it's likely the cracks are really her deep-rooted trauma that is increasingly starting to show. This could similarly be why, in WandaVision episode 3, Vision has newfound super speed. The power is more associated with Quicksilver, and it suggests that Wanda has unwittingly brought through elements of his character into this reality, or even that she tried and failed to bring him back as well. Either way, as WandaVision progresses, it seems likely that more aspects of the real trauma Wanda has will continue to bleed into Westview, alongside the attempts from S.W.O.R.D. to break into it.

WandaVision's Ultron Reference Pushed Scarlet Witch Too Far

Geraldine In WandaVision Episode 3

WandaVision episode 3 took things further by directly referencing both Pietro and Ultron, making the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron feel even more crucial to the series. This mention came from Geraldine, as she attempted to get through to Wanda, seemingly trying to penetrate the fake reality to see if there were any true memories lingering within, and hoping that going for one of the most emotive topics would do just that. Unfortunately for Geraldine, the impact was far from positive, as referencing how Ultron killed Quicksilver only served to push Wanda over the edge. In an incredible display of power, Scarlet Witch banished Geraldine from Westview, forcing her through an energy field of some sort and back out into the real world.

It's clear (and understandable) that Pietro and Ultron are names that cut close to the bone for Wanda, because they're so closely connected to her grief and the horrors she has experienced. Neither character has been mentioned much in the MCU since Age of Ultron - largely because there has been little focus on Scarlet Witch's arc - but this likely won't be the last viewers hear of them. It's possible that S.W.O.R.D. could again try using them as a means of pushing Wanda out of her bubble, or that, if there's another villain behind everything, then they could use it to try and have WandaVision cause more damage, fully unleashing her powers. The mention of both characters feels too important, given what the show is exploring, to not be developed further in future episodes.

Scarlet Witch's Breakdown Could Result In Her Re-creating Ultron

Wanda acts normally after kicking Monica out of the hex

Just hearing the names of Pietro and Ultron, and what happened, was enough to send Scarlet Witch into a terrifying rage that allowed her to expel Geraldine, and given that's just episode 3, things will likely ratchet up a few more notches yet. Because Wanda is being forced to now confront her memories of Quicksilver, when it was before unclear exactly what she knew and remembered, then it may mean she tries to bring him back, or at least that more parts from that specific bit of backstory start flooding in - which is what could lead to Ultron's return. If she does bring Quicksilver back, then because Ultron is so tied to him as the cause of his death, then he may return to in some way as a counterbalance to it, with Wanda not fully able to control exactly how things work or return.

Similarly, the idea of her traumas breaking through into Westview mean there's an even greater chance of an Ultron return, because his actions and the hurt he caused are now so fresh in her mind. This fits anyway, because chronologically he'd be coming up pretty soon in terms of what the commercials are doing, but that she may be so actively thinking about him could force that to happen on an even larger scale. There could be further twists with this, because Ultron would presumably be "Westview-ified" in some way, much like how other characters viewers know are from elsewhere appear differently, but that would only add to the intrigue and excitement.

Ultron is, of course, also very closely linked to Vision, with them sharing links to Tony Stark and the Mind Stone. WandaVision's trailers teased the return of the Mind Stone in some form, suggesting it has to be extremely important to its plot and Vision's return. If his return is linked to the Mind Stone in some way, then it would further make sense for Ultron to be brought back too as a result, since it's possible some connection remains between them.

WandaVision Episode 3 Easter Eggs Ultron Hydra Scarlet Witch

If Ultron were to return then, in the short term, he'd serve as another terror for Scarlet Witch to be haunted by in WandaVision. He wouldn't necessarily have to be the major threat, because he could be another resident, with Scarlet Witch knowing something is wrong but the show playing around with it like it has the other characters, rather than a more straightforward villain turn in exactly the same way he was in Avengers: Age of Ultron. But looking further ahead, there may also be the chance to fully bring the character back into the MCU. Ultron was underserved by his appearance in the second Avengers movie, with a lackluster script letting down what should've been a huge and memorable threat. Plenty of villains have been hard done by in the MCU, but few have a means of returning like Ultron now does.

Episode 3 teased the possibility that Vision could live on beyond the end of WandaVision. In reality, Geraldine is Monica Rambeau, who was seemingly transformed when she was sucked into Westview, much like the beekeeper and toy helicopter. However, when she was banished by Scarlet Witch, she remained in her Westview clothes, which could suggest that what happens in Wanda's fake reality does have some impact on the real world, which would further explain just why S.W.O.R.D. is getting involved anyway. So if that were the case and Ultron does return, then it's possibile he could, like Vision, live on for a bigger return elsewhere in Marvel Phase 4 or beyond.
