Warning: SPOILERS for WandaVision Episode 9 - "The Series Finale"

In its final two episodes, WandaVision revealed itself to be about how Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) gained the title and full powers of the Scarlet Witch. Along with Vision (Paul Bettany) reclaiming his own identity, WandaVision's macro story resets the purpose of superhero nicknames in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has downplayed them for years. In fact, WandaVision is now the gold standard for how and why an MCU superhero gets their codename.

Earlier in the season, WandaVision made a deliberate point that Wanda Maximoff wasn't called by a "funny nickname". Although Wanda was a member of the Avengers, she had no fancy moniker or alter ego like her teammates Steve Rogers/Captain America (Chris Evans), Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), James Rhodes/War Machine (Don Cheadle), or Sam Wilson/The Falcon (Anthony Mackie). Unlike her fellow Avengers, Wanda didn't have a military career or was an Agent of SHIELD, which is where their codenames came from. Not having a "funny nickname" is just one thing Wanda had in common with Vision, besides being wayward souls wrestling with who they are and how they fit in the world. This mutual understanding of their existential predicament helped Vision and Wanda fall in love.

When Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) revealed her endgame and sought to steal Wanda's magic, she proved her theory that Maximoff was the Scarlet Witch, a wielder of chaos magic who is "destined to destroy the world". Wanda ultimately embraced the full range of her powers and turned the very lessons Agatha taught her against the villainous witch. After fighting the very idea, Wanda realized she was a witch - the Scarlet Witch complete with a new costume - after all. WandaVision's second post-credits scene showed Wanda living in extreme isolation in the wilderness while she also manifested as the Scarlet Witch, learning to use her powers from the magic tome called the Darkhold. Before she was defeated, Agatha kept repeating that Wanda didn't know what she unleashed into the world, so this must be part of what Maximoff is studying as the Scarlet Witch.

Wanda and Vision

Vision - or rather, the White Vision who was rebuilt from the parts of the original Synthezoid who died in Avengers: Infinity War - also regained his true identity. This was thanks to the Vision who can only exist within The Hex challenging his doppelganger with the riddle of the Ship of Theseus. Vision restored White Vision's memories and data with his Mind Stone abilities, allowing the "true" Vision to emerge, although he vanished into the sky to continue to find answers to his questions about identity. Vision and the Scarlet Witch will probably reunite and say "hello" again down the road.

Both Scarlet Witch and Vision affirmed their true identities on their terms, which is a far cry from how many of their fellow heroes gained their superhero identities. Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) was named "Iron Man" by a newspaper headline and ran with it because it was cool. It was Stark announcing "I am Iron Man!" to the press that upended the very nature of superhero secret identities in the MCU. But while Tony relished being Iron Man, Steve Rogers was never truly comfortable living as the ideal of Captain America, which was originally a stage name for his World War II propaganda tour. Black Widow and Hawkeye were more likely to be called "Agent Romanoff" and "Agent Barton" than by their SHIELD designations, while Peter Parker (Tom Holland) had no choice but to embrace being "the Spider-Man of YouTube" when his exploits went viral.

WandaVision was about both Wanda Maximoff and Vision struggling with their identity and heroically becoming who they once were (in the case of Vision) or who they were always meant to be (Scarlet Witch). WandaVision also sets a high bar going forward for the other superheroes to come or already in the MCU. For instance, how Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) became known as Captain Marvel is a big question that the MCU must answer. While no one was around except Billy (Jullian Hilliard) and Tommy (Jett Kylne) when Agatha first announced Wanda is the Scarlet Witch, that name could easily spread since the people of Westview probably remember everything they endured from Wanda's mind control, and that could include her new codename.
