The fourth episode of Disney+’s WandaVision revealed the truth about Westview, and with that the extent of Scarlet Witch’s powers, but why can’t the cops outside Westview see what’s going on with the town? After reaching its peak with Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, and Spider-Man: Far From Home marking the end of the Infinity Saga, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is moving on with its Phase 4, which includes not only movies but also TV shows to be released on Disney+, and first in line is WandaVision.

Set after the events of Avengers: Endgame, WandaVision follows Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) as they live an idyllic suburban life in the town of Westview, with each episode in the style of sitcoms from different decades. However, viewers soon learn that things are not what they seem, and the truth behind Wanda and Vision’s seemingly perfect life might be too dark. The first three episodes of WandaVision dropped some hints at what’s really going on in Westview, as there have been a couple of glitches and Wanda herself has rewound time, as seen when the Beekeeper arrived and when Vision began to become aware of their strange surroundings. Now, episode 4 was an important one as it took viewers outside Westview to see what’s really going on with it and S.W.O.R.D.’s involvement in this peculiar case.

WandaVision episode 4 served as a prequel to the series, showing Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) returning after the “blip” and a bit of S.W.O.R.D.’s history, which name in the series stands for Sentient Weapon Observation Response Division. Weeks later, Rambeau returns to work at S.W.O.R.D. and is sent to help FBI agent Jimmy Woo (Randall Park) with a missing persons case in Westview, New Jersey. Once there, they realize there’s something strange with this case as some cops tell them that Westview doesn’t exist, even though they are standing a few feet away from it and right next to a “Welcome to Westview” sign. Rambeau then discovers that the town is surrounded by a hexagonal static field, and is pulled into it, thus why she’s seen in previous episodes as a resident of Westview named Geraldine.

The outskirts of Westview has a few police officers standing at the city sign in WandaVision

This episode proved that Westview is being controlled by Wanda, thus why outsiders are not welcome as they represent a threat to her perfect world, especially those from S.W.O.R.D., but it also shows the extent of Wanda’s powers and threat. Clearly, those inside the static field covering Westview are under her control to an extent, as some have shown signs of awareness, but Wanda is also having an influence on those outside Westview that could threaten to end with her illusion. Back in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Wanda used her powers to mess with the Avengers’ heads by creating illusions that they felt too real, deeply affecting some of them, so it wouldn’t be surprising if she also used this power on the cops and more in order to make them believe that Westview doesn’t exist, even if they are standing close to it.

What remains to be seen, however, is how Wanda got to Westview and why she choose it and its residents to create her ideal world alongside Vision, as well as why she has made it in the style of sitcoms from different decades. WandaVision is about to get more exciting and potentially dangerous depending on the reason why Wanda has been doing all this, and it wouldn’t be outside the realm of possibility that she has control over other people outside Westview besides the cops, all to make sure that nobody literally bursts her bubble.
