Moon Knight might have nearly made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in WandaVision. As the first MCU Disney+ show, WandaVision ended up kicking off Phase 4 at the start of 2021. The show dove deeper into known characters like Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany), but it also introduced new characters like Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn), who will be important to the future. Marvel Studios has plans to introduce dozens of new characters throughout the Phase 4 slate, and Moon Knight's MCU debut may have nearly happened in WandaVision, it seems.

Marvel fans have long hoped that Moon Knight would join the MCU. Marvel Studios confirmed that this would happen in Phase 4 during 2019 when the Moon Knight Disney+ series was announced. Excitement for the show and the character's future grew immensely once Oscar Isaac was officially cast. Once Marvel started sharing footage from Moon Knight, the TV show became one of the MCU's most anticipated 2022 projects. Instead of introducing the fan-favorite comic character in another property first, Moon Knight's MCU debut will come in his own series. However, there's now a chance Marvel considered another path to setting him up.

The release of Marvel's Art of WandaVision brings plenty of alternate ideas for the series, which might now reveal that WandaVision almost included Moon Knight's MCU debut. The book covers many different aspects of the show's production, characters, and props, and Vision's magic box from WandaVision episode 2 could've set up Moon Knight. Some alternate designs for Vision's magic box include an unnamed figure dressed in all white and holding a staff with a crescent moon on the top. The hooded figure has plenty of similarities to Moon Knight, which could indicate that WandaVision episode 2 considered referencing Oscar Isaac's MCU superhero with Vision's disappearing box for his magic act. A few of the potential Moon Knight designs can be seen below:

Moon Knight MCU Debut WandaVision Art of Book Concept Art

It is unconfirmed if Moon Knight was the inspiration for this WandaVision figure, but the similarities are clear. Although the concept art has differences from Oscar Isaac's final MCU costume, the all-white suit and the pointed tip of the hood are cornerstones of Moon Knight's design. The presence of the crescent moon staff further indicates that this figure is Moon Knight in some form. There are also additional pieces of concept art that appear to have Egyptian hieroglyphics behind the figure on Vision's magic box, which makes sense considering Moon Knight's connection to Egyptian mythology.

While this potential Moon Knight MCU debut didn't happen in WandaVision, it is fascinating to consider how and why this would happen. Almost everything inside Westview came from Wanda's mind, as Vision's final magic box even included the Mind Stone on it. Moon Knight is not a known hero at this point in the MCU, so Scarlet Witch having any knowledge of him would've been surprising. However, it could've been a way for Marvel to link WandaVision's magical elements to the supernatural corner of the world Moon Knight can explore. Since the potential connection wasn't used in WandaVision, Scarlet Witch and Moon Knight will have to wait for a future MCU project to interact.
