Captain Marvel 2 just became a lot more interesting with the surprising mid-credits scene in the series finale of WandaVision. Monica Rambeau has a new mission after Westview, and it's going to take her into space. With her path destined to cross with Carol Danvers, there are a number of great comic book scenes that would be great to see in the movie.

Monica has had a lot of great moments over the years as Captain Marvel, Photon, Spectrum (and many other names). She's been the leader of the Avengers, an interdimensional fighter, and much more. Not all the comics will work in the context of the movie, but they could provide some foundation for great screen moments.

Awkward Introduction

Carol Danvers and Monica Rambeau meet for the first time in Marvel Comics.

Monica and Carol are virtually family in the MCU, but in the comics, they met for the first time after The Thing introduced her to the Avengers. She became a member-in-training with the team in Avengers #227 and it's there she met Carol for the first time.

This awkward introduction - Carol had been the partner of the original Captain Marvel, and he had passed not long before - could provide the base for an equally difficult reunion in the MCU. Some tension exists between Carol and Monica the movie will surely explore.

Choosing Her Name

Monica isn't likely to take the Captain Marvel name in the MCU - though anything is possible - which means that she'll have to pick a new one. One of her codenames, Photon, was her mother's call sign in the Air Force. That seems very likely, though it's as likely she picks Spectrum, which is more in line with her unique powers.

Carol and Monica had a funny if charged debate over who would keep the Captain Marvel name after Carol unilaterally adopted it in 2012, after being Ms. Marvel for a number of years.

Working With The Skrulls

Avengers Monica Rambeau Working With Skrulls

As was clear from the end of WandaVision, Monica is going to be working closely with Skrulls going forward. That has roots in the comics. She worked alongside the Skrulls during extended periods she spent in space with the Avengers. In Avengers #259, Monica rallies the team to the aid of the Skrulls, who have been ravaged by the space pirate Nebula.

Nebula of course is a member of the Guardians Of The Galaxy and reformed, but there could be some potential crossover between the Skrulls and Nebula in the movie. Monica could also appear in Secret Invasion, the series featuring Nick Cage and based on another famous Skrull comic book storyline.

Taking Flight

Monica Rambeau Flying

Monica Rambeau has a lot of unique powers in the comics. She slowly discovers them in WandaVision, but in Captain Marvel 2, it would be great to see Monica fully explore her potential. In the comics, Monica discovered her ability to fly gradually, as a result of her gaining superpowers in The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #16 in October 1982.

Her powers have always been a source of joy and discovery for her, and a great moment in the movie would be her figuring out the whole flying thing for the first time.

Putting On The Costume For The First Time

Monica Rambeau Spectrum New Costume

Monica's SWORD outfit echoes her more recent black and white-themed superhero costumes in the comics, but it's not likely to be her final outfit. A great moment from the comics for the movie would be Monica finally putting her true costume on.

Historically, she's kept the star pattern as part of her costume, so that is likely to be there. If she carries over the SWORD color scheme, it is likely to look a lot like her costume from The Mighty Avengers era from the late 2000s.

Facing Off Against Genis-Vell

Monica Rambeau fights Genis-Vell in panel from Marvel Comics.

With the news that actress Zawe Ashton is playing the villain in the upcoming Captain Marvel 2, speculation is rampant on who the villain of the movie could be. Ashton could be playing any number of Marvel baddies from the comics and while it's unlikely she will play Genis-Vell, he could feature in the movie in some way.

That would be great, because his battle with Monica over the mantle of Captain Marvel is one of her standout moments. The son of Mar-Vell fought her for the name, which she doesn't have in the MCU, but their duel would be a good way to establish her powers and a new villain.

Kang's War

Kang the Conqueror Avengers 70 Marvel Comics

The villain of Captain Marvel 2 could go a number of different directions. One possibility involves Kang The Conqueror, who fans know will feature in Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania. Monica fought against the time-traveling Marvel villain during the Kang's War storyline which ran through Avengers #41-55 in 2000 and 2001.

During this period, Monica is assigned to a deep space monitoring station and leads the attack against Kang's base of operations. She helps liberate the world after Kang successfully takes over the Earth.

Crashing Universes

Captain Marvel Monica Rambeau Secret Wars

The multiverse is sure to be an influence on Phase Four of the MCU, with Doctor Octopus and Electro crossing over into Spider-Man: No Way Home. That could manifest in some way with Captain Marvel 2 as well. There is precedent for Carol and Monica fighting in the multiverse - they did in the 2015 Secret Wars storyline.

Allies With Carol Danvers

Captain Marvel Monica Rambeau Civil War II

Monica and Carol have some issues to work out it seems, but hopefully, the movie will end with them resolving their differences. One of the greatest recent moments in the comics came during the Civil War II event.

Carol led a faction of heroes against Iron Man in a battle over using precogs to preemptively take down threats. Monica sided with Carol in the fight, standing by her even as the battle escalated out of control and even resulted in the death of Bruce Banner, the Hulk.

Finding Her Limits

Monica Rambeau Powers Marvel Comics

Monica's powers are vast. She can transform herself into any form of energy within the electromagnetic spectrum, including cosmic rays, gamma rays, X-rays, ultraviolet radiation, visible light, electricity, and more. She can harness and manipulate that energy with no theoretical limit. A major moment in the comics is when she burns herself out in Avengers #291.

She exhausted all her power after a massive energy burst and lost her abilities for some time. With the help of Reed Richards, she was able to slowly learn how to maintain her powers even after using them at a high level.
