Monica Rambeau hears several familiar voices as she breaks through the Westview barrier in WandaVision episode 7. The adult version of Monica, played by Teyonah Parris, might not be one of the two main characters in WandaVision, but the Disney+ show has done wonders for her. Audiences first met a young "Lieutenant Trouble" in Captain Marvel, and her return as "Geraldine" in WandaVision was only the beginning of her evolution.

Over the last several episodes, WandaVision has shown Monica return during The Blip after being gone for five years, learn her mother Maria Rambeau died, revealed Monica to be an agent of SWORD, showed how she entered the Westview anomaly and teased that she gained powers as a result. As a superhero in the comics who has gone by Photon, Spectrum, Captain Marvel, and other aliases, the confirmation of Monica's powers in episode 7 signifies her bright Marvel Cinematic Universe future. She only gains her abilities after passing through the energy barrier around Westview.

Monica had to push her way through the Hex and heard many voices in her head as she tried to do so. Unless viewers watched WandaVision episode 7 with closed captions turned on, though, there is a chance that some missed the identities of these people and what they said. Monica hears six different voices as she breaks through WandaVision's barrier and each one uses lines of dialogue from past MCU projects to pinpoint moments in Monica's past. The voices she hears belong to a younger version of herself, Maria Rambeau, Nick Fury, Carol Danvers, Jimmy Woo, and Doctor Harley.

The first exchange Monica hears is between her younger self, her mother, and Nick Fury. It's lifted from Captain Marvel when they are planning a trip to Wendy Lawson's secret space base. Maria mentions that she can't leave Monica because it's too dangerous, but Monica suggests that she could go to space with them and only go halfway. This is where Fury steps in to joke that this can only happen if "you learn to glow like your Aunt Carol." Not only has WandaVision revealed Monica already has gone to space before, but these words play here right before Monica's eyes start glowing for the first time.

Maria is heard again, but her line comes from a different point in Captain Marvel and isn't even about Monica. She can be heard saying, "And you were the most powerful person I knew." When Maria said this in Carol Danvers' solo movie, this was in reference to Captain Marvel. Monica hearing that line again now comes after WandaVision teased she and Carol are not on good terms. Intriguingly, Carol's voice is the last one Monica hears, as the show uses her quote about Monica being the toughest kid. It is right after this that Monica pulls the different versions of herself together and makes the final push through the barrier, proving just how tough she is.

The other lines Monica hears reference the death and legacy of her mother. Dr. Harley can be heard saying, "Your mom, she died, honey." Jimmy Woo's voice is heard immediately after this and he says that Maria "was truly an inspiration." The death of Maria is something that is clearly still motivating Monica and an event she is still trying to process. It is one of the defining moments in her life to this point, but also one filled with grief. Since Wanda Maximoff's grief is tied to why she wanted the fake suburban life with Vision and their kids, this could be the Hex reminding Monica of her grief yet again. Monica previously mentioned she felt grief, pain, and loss while inside Westview the first time, but she fought past those emotions upon re-entry. Now she's in a position to be in control of herself and hopefully play a role in helping Scarlet Witch defeat the villain behind WandaVision.
