WandaVision's newest trailer has a notable reference to "House of M" from the Marvel comics, which further suggests the Disney+ show is setting up a version of that huge event. The new trailer dropped during Disney's end-of-year Investor Day live stream when the studio announced its lineup of projects for the next few years from across its various IPs. While there was something for everyone, fans were most excited for the announced projects from Lucasfilm and the footage from the various Marvel series set to debut in a few months on Disney+.

The first of those is WandaVision, set to drop in January 2021. The series, which picks up after the events of Avengers: Endgame, finds Wanda Maximoff, a.k.a. Scarlet Witch, and Vision living together in what appears to be an alternate reality. As for why it's an alternate reality, it has to be, considering Vision was killed by Thanos at the end of Infinity War, and it was a permanent death, not one that could be reversed (for now). As such, it's made fans speculate this is Marvel's live-action adaptation of the "House of M" storyline from the comics.

One particular moment from the newest trailer has fans even more firmly convinced that's the story Marvel is borrowing from. During the trailer, Teyonah Parris's Monica Rambeau appears at Wanda and Vision's house. It seems like an ordinary visit from a friendly neighbor – except Wanda has no idea who Monica is, and when she asks, "Who are you?," Monica's perfect sitcom smile falters as she admits, "I don't know..." and the music makes a sinister warble. It's a clear reference to the events of "House of M," and so is the snippet of a disembodied voice desperately trying to contact Wanda over a radio to "wake her up".

Monica Rambeau WandaVision

"House of M" followed the "Avengers Disassembled" storyline, in which the exceptionally powerful Scarlet Witch suffers a mental breakdown after the loss of her children. In her fragile state, Doctor Doom meddles with her mind and she ends up destroying the Avengers by altering the fabric of reality in an attempt to bring back her lost children. In the "House of M" storyline that followed, this new, alternate reality she'd created was so powerful it briefly replaced the real Marvel reality. The heroes of the world started disappearing, suddenly finding themselves in perfect lives where their hearts' desires had come true and none of them could remember what had come before. Monica's inability to recall who she is is a nod to this, the world of WandaVision clearly a comforting reality Scarlet Witch built for herself in her grief at the loss of Vision and all the tragedy she'd witnessed. Eventually, the heroes start piecing things together as memories of the real world came back. Wanda's fever dream in the comics was stopped only when she woke up, the voice on the radio in the trailer trying to break through to her acting in the place of this.

Other moments in the trailer strengthen the "House of M" connections. Someone – or something – is trying to break through their world. To what is becoming increasingly more clear is Wanda's subconscious, it appears as though someone is trying to take that world, their "home," away from her and Vision. Could those "enemies" be the other Avengers, trying desperately to revert reality back to normal? It sure seems likely. Consider that the very end of the trailer shows a brief few shots of what appears to be a memory or a hint a the truth: Vision's Mind Stone and Wanda destroying it. And "Daydream Believer" as the trailer song is about as obvious a bit of symbolism as is possible. If Marvel is indeed using a "House of M" story for WandaVision, it could have enormous, permanent effects on the entire MCU. With the Marvel multiverse, multiple timelines, and now warped realities being introduced, WandaVision is about to kick off a wild Phase 4.
