The latest episode of WandaVision finally revealed SWORD director Tyler Hayward's grand plan - but just what is Project Cataract? First introduced earlier in the season, SWORD is similar to fellow MCU organization SHIELD and protects humanity from superhuman threats. Fans familiar with the comics might have believed they knew what SWORD was all about, but WandaVision put a spin on the agency right from the beginning by altering the name slightly: SWORD now stands for Sentient Weapon Observation Response Division. The switch from "World" to "Weapon" immediately hinted at a more nefarious version of SWORD.

Over the next few episodes, WandaVision continued to raise suspicion over Hayward (Josh Stamberg) and his intentions. From his determination to label Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) as a terrorist to firing a missile straight at her, Hayward clearly has a hidden agenda. However, up until now audiences have been left to only speculate about what Hayward wants from this entire situation. Last week saw Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings) hack into SWORD's files, and the latest installment, "Breaking the Fourth Wall," finally revealed what the mysterious Project Cataract is.

Thanks to Darcy's last-minute email to Jimmy Woo (Randall Park) in the previous WandaVision, the truth about Project Cataract still got out despite Darcy's trip inside the Hex. Prior to Wanda's intervention, Hayward was attempting to bring Vision's (Paul Bettany) body back online with the intention of weaponizing him. In short, he wants to make Vision a sentient weapon, thus living up to SWORD's new name (and grossly violating the terms of Vision's living will). For whatever reason, however, Hayward has been unable to make much progress. That is, until Wanda liberated Vision's corpse and somehow resurrected him.

WandaVision Episode 5 - Director Hayward

This explains why Hayward was tracking Vision as he moved around Westview, and perhaps even why he made no move to help Vision in the last episode when the synthezoid attempted to push through the Hex. Many have theorized that Hayward's Project Cataract was about weaponizing Vision's corpse, and now they have been proven correct. It's easy to see why Hayward would be interested in utilizing Vision in this way. For one thing, he's made of vibranium, and therefore is virtually indestructible. For another, Vision's abilities make him one of the most powerful characters in the MCU. He's even capable of lifting Mjolnir, though that's arguably because of his personality instead of his body.

Now that Hayward's plan has been revealed, all eyes are on what he'll do next. One moment in WandaVision episode 7 hints at the SWORD director's next move, when he declares, "We launch today." It sounds like he's preparing an attack on the Hex, though one wonders how that's even possible. If there's anything that is certain about the strange barrier surrounding Westview, it's that it is incredibly hard to penetrate without being sucked into Wanda's altered reality. With that in mind, how does Hayward plan to move forward? It could be that he's already crafted some weapons with the research gleaned from Vision's corpse through Project Cataract, or that he could have a way to take control over Vision. Right now, it's hard to say, but WandaVision's next episode will hopefully reveal all.
