Elizabeth Olsen Explains WandaVision's Post-Credits Scene

Elizabeth Olsen explains why Scarlet Witch went into self-isolation at the end of WandaVision, and her reason has something to do with feeling guilt. The Marvel Studios show for Disney+ kicked off Phase 4 and tackled its titular heroes' ideal life as a suburban married couple. However, it's clear from the get-go that nothing was what it seemed as it's revealed that everything was essentially a fantasy

Running for nine episodes, WandaVision showed Wanda and Vision attempting to fit in Westview as if they are normal newlyweds Eventually, they welcomed their sons, Billy and Tommy, and together, they operated as a family of four. However, since their life was based on a lie created through Chaos Magic — something that Wanda didn't know she was able to do, the hex that made it possible needed to be taken down. Initially, she was adamant not to do this, but after Agatha Harkness threatened her and the rest of her community, she had to do the right thing and painfully say goodbye to her family with a promise that they'll reunite again. After the Maximoff Anomaly, WandaVision's post-credits scene revealed her to be in self-imposed isolation in an unknown place.

Speaking with Rolling Stone as part of the oral history of WandaVision, Olsen explains what motivated Scarlet Witch to skip town after the hex was taken down and according to her, it's because she feels immense guilt for what she did to the people of Westview. In addition to that, she also didn't want people who were surely going to hold her accountable for what happened catching and potentially imprisoning her. So instead, she essentially did it on her own terms.

“She had to get away before the people who have to hold her accountable got there. And where she went is a place that no one could find her. Because she knows that she is going to be held accountable, and I think she has a tremendous amount of guilt.”

There were criticisms about how Marvel Studios handled the aftermath of the Maximoff Anomaly. Her victims in Westview were freed from her spell, but they were left with psychological trauma that would burden them moving forward. It didn't help that Wanda herself didn't suffer any consequences from what she did other than losing her family which was part of her choice to take down the hex anyway. In hindsight, this issue stems from WandaVision not clearly showing that Scarlet Witch is remorseful for what she did; instead, fleeing town and settling in a cabin in the middle of nowhere looked like a self-serving move to keep her enemies far away from her.

Regardless of this storytelling lapse, Olsen confirming that Wanda feels guilty about what she did in Westview can be an indication that at the end of the day, she's still good. In the WandaVision penultimate episode, she seemed comfortable in the idea of being a villain as she rejected Monica Rambeau's request to remove the hex. That said, considering that she was last seen learning more about the dark magic from the Darkhold, she might unknowingly still make mistakes, making her more dangerous as she grows stronger.
