While it didn’t seem too thrilling when it was first announced, Scarlet Witch and the Vision’s upcoming Disney+ series WandaVision is shaping up to be one of the most exciting upcoming MCU projects. The series will lead Scarlet Witch to join the Sorcerer Supreme in his standalone sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and also bring back various MCU supporting players that we thought we’d seen the last of, like Randall Park’s FBI agent character Jimmy Woo and Kat Dennings’ comic relief character Darcy Lewis.

One such returning character is Monica Rambeau, who we last saw as a starry-eyed kid in the mid-‘90s in Captain Marvel and will appear as an adult in WandaVision. Here are 10 Fan Theories About Monica Rambeau’s Role In WandaVision.

She’s working with Nick Fury and S.W.O.R.D.

SWORD The Peak Marvel Comics

The shocking post-credits twist in Spider-Man: Far From Home seemed to suggest that Nick Fury had been in space working with S.W.O.R.D., the cosmic alternative to S.H.I.E.L.D. from the comics. Since Fury and Monica have an established relationship and Monica was one of the few humans to have encountered alien life pre-Battle of New York, one fan theory suggests that maybe she’ll be a S.W.O.R.D. agent who is assigned to keep an eye on Wanda Maximoff and Vision as they begin to alter the fabric of reality.

This role has been compared to Coulson in the first Thor movie – a bureaucrat lingering in the background; not a villain per se, but definitely a hindrance to the protagonists.

It’ll set up her appearance in Captain Marvel 2

Captain Marvel arrives on the battlefield in Avengers Endgame

Some eagle-eyed Marvel fans at the company’s Comic-Con panel earlier this year noticed that when Kevin Feige announced that a Captain Marvel sequel was in development, Teyonah Harris – the actor who has been cast to play older Monica Rambeau in WandaVision – cheered.

This suggested to some that she will be appearing in the movie, and since Feige has been stressing how closely Marvel’s Disney+ series will link to the MCU movies (in contrast to the MCU Netflix series), perhaps WandaVision is the necessary narrative stepping stone between young Monica’s appearance in the first Captain Marvel movie and older Monica’s appearance in the second one.

She’ll get her superpowers

Monica Rambeau as Spectrum using her powers in Marvel Comics.

In the comics, Monica Rambeau has superpowers and has gone by a number of superhero aliases, most notably Spectrum. So, maybe in WandaVision, we’ll see how Monica gets those powers to set her up for a more important role in future movies.

However, some fans don’t want to see Monica get her powers and become Spectrum in WandaVision and want Marvel to save it for Captain Marvel 2, where she can have a proper introduction that will also carry more emotional weight – imagine Carol Danvers breaking down as she thinks Monica is dead and then being relieved to find that she’s now a superhero like her.

She’ll be revealed to be a mutant

Scarlet Witch using her powers in Avengers Infinity War

With the Fox/Disney merger finally going through and Kevin Feige trying to figure out how to fit the X-Men and the Fantastic Four into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, WandaVision might have the earliest hint of mutants existing in the MCU.

It already seems as though the series will retcon Scarlet Witch’s powers, which could involve revealing her to be a mutant (maybe she and her brother were born mutants, but they couldn’t access their powers until Hydra scientists exposed them to the Mind Stone), and Monica Rambeau’s role in it all could involve her being revealed as a mutant, too.

She meets Vision during a trip to Wakanda

Of the many things that are unclear about WandaVision – how it ties into Doctor Strange 2, why it’s being made as a sitcom, what Monica Rambeau’s role will be etc. – the unclearest is how one of its title characters, Vision, will be brought back to life. The last time we saw him, Thanos was ripping the Mind Stone out of his head in Wakanda, killing him.

Maybe he’ll be getting repaired on Wakanda, and since Monica Rambeau is undoubtedly studying aerospace engineering or some such impressive scientific subject, she could visit Wakanda (carrying on a plot thread from Black Panther that the secretive African nation was opening its doors to the wider world) and get involved that way.

She’ll be the one to figure out how to bring Vision back to life

Avengers Infinity War Ending

Rather than just showing up where someone else is trying to figure out how to bring Vision back to life without the Mind Stone or Tony Stark’s J.A.R.V.I.S. tech, perhaps Monica will become more integral to the plot by being the actual scientist who figures out how to bring Vision back to life following his brutal death at the hands of Thanos in Infinity War.

It makes sense that after her childhood hero Carol Danvers got turned into a superhero by the Cosmic Cube, Monica would dedicate her life to studying the Infinity Stones, and this know-how might make her able to create a synthetic Mind Stone to bring Vision back.

She has to find the Darkhold before it releases Chthon into the world

With WandaVision reportedly exploring worlds and storylines that, as yet, haven’t been featured in the MCU and Doctor Strange 2 following it up with the MCU’s first horror movie, some fans are theorizing that Chthon will have something to do with the plot.

Chthon is an Elder God that exists in the void between realities. If Scarlet Witch loses control of her powers and starts toying with the fabric of reality, it might introduce the terrifying Chthon into the MCU. This is where Monica Rambeau might come in, searching for the Darkhold to prevent Chthon from being released into the world.

She’s an FBI agent assigned to watch Wanda

Protectors Jimmy Woo Randall Park SR

Randall Park was recently cast in WandaVision to reprise his role as the FBI agent who kept an eye on Scott Lang while he was under house arrest in Ant-Man and the Wasp. This makes it seem like, in WandaVision, Wanda will be under the watchful eye of some FBI agents, including the one played by Park.

Perhaps Monica Rambeau will have grown up to become an FBI agent and she’ll be working with Park’s character Jimmy Woo, maybe even as his partner. It would make sense for Monica to follow in her mother’s footsteps and choose to serve her country, except instead of serving it in the military, she’ll be serving it as a federal government agent.

Tony Stark’s finger-snap will unlock Monica’s latest cosmic powers

Avengers Endgame Iron Man Tony Stark Death Robert Downey Jr

It’s pretty clear that Tony Stark’s finger-snap in Avengers: Endgame – as well as Thanos and the Hulk’s own finger-snaps – will have huge ramifications for the wider world of the MCU going forward. Monica Rambeau spent a lot of her childhood hanging around with Carol Danvers, who was infected with cosmic energy from the Space Stone.

This might have given her some cosmic powers of her own that were only unlocked later in her life when all six Infinity Stones were used on Earth while she was definitely there (since this was after the Hulk had brought back a potentially “dusted” Monica). She could become a sort of Captain Marvel, Jr. if this is the case.

She’ll figure out the multiverse

It’s about time the MCU properly introduced the multiverse. Something is happening with the multiverse in Doctor Strange 2 (hence the name Multiverse of Madness) and it’ll have something to do with Wanda Maximoff, possibly involving her losing touch with reality and singlehandedly creating alternate timelines (which might explain why she’s starring in a sitcom with her dead boyfriend who’s suddenly very much alive).

In the comics, Monica Rambeau’s powers allow her to tap into the multiverse and spot any changes to various timelines. This might explain how she fits into WandaVision, as well as how WandaVision will lead into Doctor Strange 2.
