From the very beginning of WandaVision, it has been reiterated that everything in Westview has been 'for the children.' That odd intonation from the mysterious Dottie became reality with the birth of The Vision and Scarlet Witch's powerful twin sons, Tommy and Billy. The brothers have a long and complex history in the comics as their parents do.

Their lives and deaths have been an integral part of the most important stories in the comics for nearly twenty years. Their apparent deaths pushed Wanda Maximoff over the edge, and their resurrection has helped usher the comics into a more modern era.

Unusual Birth

The Vision And The Scarlet Witch welcome their children in Marvel Comics.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Scarlet Witch's powers and abilities are growing exponentially. The same has been true in the comics for decades. The first real indication of her escalating powers was the manifesting of her children with Vision.

In the 1985 mini-series The Vision And The Scarlet Witch (written by Steve Englehart with art by Richard Howell), the former Avengers seek a normal life in the suburbs. In the course of the story, Wanda uses her growing power in magic to conceive the twins.

Master Pandemonium

Master Pandemonium recaptures fragments of his soul in Marvel Comics.

Happiness in suburbia doesn't last very long. A few years later, their happiness is upended by a villain called Master Pandemonium. Pandemonium was a former actor who made a deal with the Marvel devil, Mephisto, and became a demon.

He believes Tommy and Billy are made from magic harnessed from fragments of his soul. He then abducts and absorbed the souls of the boys back into himself, effectively killing them and setting off a chain of events that would lead to outright disaster for the entire Marvel Universe.

Fragments of Mephisto

The story took another shocking turn when Mephisto himself appeared. He revealed that the soul fragments Wanda used to create her children weren't Master Pandemonium's, but his.

Mephisto had used Master Pandemonium to seek out the missing fragments of his soul rather than do so himself, as he had been wounded in an encounter with Franklin Richards (who is the powerful mutant son of Reed Richards and Sue Storm). Franklin, like Wanda, also has the ability to alter reality.

Wanda Forgets

Not surprisingly, Wanda couldn't cope with the tragic loss of her children. She was also grieving from the loss of Vision, who had lost his own soul in a way during the Vision Quest storyline - something which may be worth reading in comics if fans are interested in looking beyond WandaVision. In order to move on, Wanda forgot Tommy and Billy ever existed.

Wanda doesn't do this on her own. Her memories are suppressed by her mentor and fellow sorceress Agatha Harkness, (who may be in Westview in the guise of Agnes).

Wanda Remembers

Doctor Strange tries to help Scarlet Witch in House of M comics.

Wanda eventually regains her memories of the children, thanks to an inadvertent slip up by The Wasp. This sets off a terrifying and apocalyptic set of events. Wanda tries to restore the souls of her children, which leads to her being manipulated into attacking the Avengers in Avengers Disassembled.

That leads directly into the House Of M, a seminal comic book that influences WandaVision. When the false reality of her children being alive finally crumbles, Wanda lashes out, decimating the mutant population on Earth with a simple phrase: 'No more mutants.'

Young Avengers

Young Avengers assemble in Marvel Comics.

The saga of Tommy and Billy Maximoff appeared to be over after House Of M, but it took a strange turn with the introduction of the Young Avengers. This team of teen heroes, all with connections to existing Avengers, featured William "Billy" Kaplan-Altman (known as Wiccan) and Thomas "Tommy" Shepherd (known as Speed).

Wiccan bore some resemblance to Scarlet Witch with his magical powers, and Speed shared the super-fast power and appearance of Wanda's brother Pietro Maximoff, better known as Quicksilver. Along with Kate Bishop Hawkeye and American Chavez, this team is clearly being set up in the MCU.

The Search For The Scarlet Witch

Wiccan and Speed

The otherwise unrelated story of Wiccan and Speed takes a mysterious turn when the Young Avengers have a run-in with Master Pandemonium. He recognizes Wiccan's powers as being very similar to the Scarlet Witch's and warns them against digging too deep into the past. "The Search For The Scarlet Witch" storyline plays out in the pages of Young Avengers Presents as the duo seeks out Wanda for answers and slowly comes to the realization that they are connected in deep and powerful ways.

The Children's Crusade

Things come to a head in the limited series Avengers: The Children's Crusade from 2010. Wiccan and Speed finally find Wanda in Latveria, as the apparent bride of Doctor Doom. Wanda has amnesia but with the help of Magneto and Quicksilver, she regains her memory and her children.

Wanda realizes that Wiccan and Speed are the reincarnated souls of her Tommy and Billy. Less clear is whether they displaced the souls of Tommy Shepherd and Billy Kaplan, or if they were somehow always those boys as well.

Wiccan Is Married To Hulking

Wiccan and Speed's story continued after the breakup of the Young Avengers and the discovery of their true parentage. Wiccan has become a major player in the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe thanks to his romance with former teammate Hulking. The two fell in love early on, and just recently got married in the pages of the Empyre crossover event. Hulking and Wiccan have become two of the most memorable LGBTQI+ characters in the entire Marvel Universe.

Speed Is Dating Prodigy

Prodigy Speed X-Factor Kiss

Speed is also another memorable LGBTQI+ character, with the hero having romances with Kate Bishop and, most recently, Prodigy from the pages of X-Factor. The two have had a flirty relationship for years, but just recently, they have progressed to a more romantic place.

The two are part of the X-Factor Investigations squad on the island of Krakoa, and also part of a larger mystery. A prime example of this? There appear to be two different versions of Prodigy. Could this be a mishap perhaps in the unique resurrection protocols the X-Men have recently employed in the Dawn Of X era?
