WandaVision has just made every single Marvel Television series redundant, rendering Agents of SHIELD and Runaways non-canon. When Agents of SHIELD launched in 2013, viewers were assured it was a part of the same shared universe as the movies. Unfortunately, the films and the TV shows became increasingly distanced from one another as time passed, particularly after an organizational restructure in 2015 that removed Marvel Studios from the wider Marvel Entertainment group.

Still, Marvel Television did their best to try to tie in all the same. There's a sense in which Thanos himself was the real villain of Agents of SHIELD season 5, which attempted to tie into Avengers: Infinity War;  that tie-in became a problem when ABC signed off on another two seasons because the showrunners had no idea how Marvel Studios was going to resolve the snap. As a result, the thematic and narrative differences between the mainstream MCU and Marvel Television's shows became a gulf that appeared impossible to span. When Marvel Studios set about making their own Disney+ TV shows, which would feature a budget beyond anything Marvel Television produced, everyone suspected the old shows would be diminished by them.

But WandaVision has gone one step further, outright contradicting Agents of SHIELD and Runaways. The final episodes confirmed Agatha Harkness possessed the Darkhold, the most famous book of dark magic in the comics. But here's the problem: the Darkhold has already appeared in Marvel Television's Agents of SHIELD and Runaways, and it looked completely different. While it's true a book of magic could conceivably change its appearance, the fact remains Marvel Studios actively chose to ignore a potential continuity nod and use a different design. That indicates a certain dismissive attitude, with the studio choosing not to let old Marvel Television content influence its creative decisions in any way.

The sad truth is that this has been coming for a while. Back in 2016, actress Chloe Bennet openly called out Marvel Studios on ignoring Agents of SHIELD: "People who make movies for Marvel, why don’t you acknowledge what happens on our show," she complained. "Why don’t you guys go ask them that? Cause they don’t seem to care!" Given this unfortunate attitude had been evidenced for quite some time, it's no surprise to see it openly manifesting now Marvel Studios is producing their own small-screen adventures — especially given even Agents of SHIELD has come to an end.

There may yet be salvation for the likes of Agents of SHIELD, though: the MCU is headed towards a new Multiverse model, and Marvel could choose to adopt the approach taken by DC Film and TV, in which all previous screen adaptations are part of a wider Multiverse. Indeed, one reason the WandaVision finale proved so divisive is that many thought Evan Peters' appearance as Quicksilver was just such an indication — but it turned out to be a red herring.
