The place that Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) went to at the end of the WandaVision season finale could be a tease to a future MCU villain. If it’s true that the show just introduced Wundagore Mountain – a major location in Marvel Comics – it could be further evidence that Marvel is about to bring the magic villain Chthon into the MCU, possibly in Phase 4.

In the final episode of WandaVision, the series wrapped up its Westview story by having Wanda defeat Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn). The Hex finally collapsed in the aftermath, and as a result, Wanda lost both the fake Vision (Paul Bettany) and her two children, as all three were manifestations of her Chaos Magic powers. Wanda’s story is confirmed to continue in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, where she will appear alongside Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sorcerer Supreme.

How she’ll get entwined with Doctor Strange and what adventure they’ll share together wasn’t touched on by WandaVision, but one of the post-credits scenes in the season finale did provide a few hints of what may be coming next for her character. At a secluded cabin in the mountains, Wanda was seen reading the Darkhold, and the voices of her children could be heard, which indicates that the two do still exist somewhere in the MCU. It’s quite possible that this scene – or more specifically, the location of the cabin – is a big clue as to where the MCU is headed with Scarlet Witch.

Wundagore Mountain in Marvel Comics Explained

Darkhold Wundagore Mountain Chthon

Wundagore Mountain is arguably one of the most important locations in Marvel Comics. Located in the fictional Eastern European country known as Transia, the mountain is the setting for a number of stories revolving around Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Black Knight, Thor, and the X-Men. Long ago, an ancient and powerful god known as Chthon was imprisoned by a group of sorcerers within the mountain. Ever since, he’s been looking for ways to obtain his freedom. His best chance at conquering the planet once again came when a pregnant woman gave birth to two children on the peak of the mountain. Seizing on this opportunity, Chthon imbued one of the twins with a fraction of his life essence; the young girl to share his power grew up to be Scarlet Witch, a key member of the Avengers. Eventually, she discovered that her abilities were secretly given to her by Chthon. His intention from the beginning was to make her the vessel of his return. With help from his pawn, Modred the Mystic, Chthon schemed to take control of Wanda’s body once her full potential was unlocked.

Because of the threat that Chthon posed to the world and the energy that resided within the mountain due to his presence, it became a home base for several Marvel characters. One in particular, the High Evolutionary, set up a headquarters there and used his experiments to genetically engineer animal-like warriors to defend against Chthon’s return. Heroes like Quicksilver and Black Knight were both chosen to lead the High Evolutionary’s team at different points in time.

Why Scarlet Witch Could Be At Wundagore Mountain

The surroundings of Wanda’s cabin in the finale draw strong comparisons to Wundagore Mountain, and this being the place where she went would fit with what the MCU is currently doing with Wanda. Prior to WandaVision, Chthon didn’t fit into her backstory, but episode 8 reworked her origin in such a way that it is possible for she and Chthon to be connected. It’s now known that Scarlet Witch didn’t actually get her powers from the Mind Stone; what it really did was reawaken and augment the abilities she already possessed. That was made clear by the reveal that she unknowingly cast a probability hex as a child.

WandaVision furthered its Chthon setup by using the Darkhold (which previously appeared in Agents of SHIELD). In the comic books, the Darkhold was a spellbook written by Chthon himself. According to Agatha, there’s a chapter in the Darkhold devoted to Scarlet Witch. If the MCU’s Chthon is the one who wrote the Darkhold, he could have prophesized – and even engineered -- her arrival. Then there’s the matter of Scarlet Witch’s Chaos Magic. In the comics, Chaos Magic is what Chthon used to rule the world back when he lived on Earth. It was his link to Wanda that allowed her to channel it in the Marvel Universe. Since her MCU counterpart has it too, it wouldn’t be surprising for it to originate from Chthon as well.

What WandaVision's Wundagore Tease Could Mean For The MCU

Chthon roaring in anger in Marvel Comics.

Wanda’s new home after WandaVision being Wundagore Mountain could have huge implications for the future. As for why she would go there, it would make sense for Wanda to stay at a place in the mountains because the isolation can give her the solitude she needs to focus on her spell-casting. But there could be a secret reason for choosing that mountain that Wanda may not even be aware of. It’s possible that Wanda was subconsciously drawn to Wundagore Mountain by Chthon, who is just starting to exert his influence on her. Given that Wanda is now using the Darkhold and is on the path to developing a greater degree of control over her abilities, now does feel like the right time for Chthon to make his big move. Chthon’s plan could be to bring her closer to him so that he can feed on her power without her realizing it. The more she uses Chaos Magic that close to his prison, the stronger his connection to her could become. If this continues, it may reach a point where Chthon is either able to break free of Wundagore Mountain, or take direct control of Wanda.

Once either of those scenarios occurs, Chthon could begin wreaking havoc on the MCU. It could be that Chthon getting loose will be the focus of Doctor Strange 2’s story. As one of the most powerful entities in Marvel Comics, he’d certainly be a character worthy of being an opponent for both Scarlet Witch and Doctor Strange in the upcoming MCU movie. Or, Marvel may be saving Chthon for a second season of WandaVision. She may help the Sorcerer Supreme with his own problem in Doctor Strange 2, and then return to Wundagore Mountain in WandaVision season 2. Similar to the High Evolutionary in the comics, it may be that there are characters living on the mountain with knowledge of Chthon who can try to warn Wanda of the god’s presence and his hold over her. If she isn’t stopped in time, Wanda could end up unleashing a threat with more destructive potential than Thanos.
