Agnes (Kathryn Hahn) may be the character who’s really responsible for Quicksilver’s surprise visit to Westview in WandaVision. The cliffhanger ending of episode 5 saw a heated argument between Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) get interrupted by a doorbell. After opening the door, Wanda was stunned to look upon the face of Evan Peters’ Pietro Maximoff.

As noted by Darcy (Kat Dennings), Quicksilver has been abruptly “recast”. In Avengers: Age of Ultron, Scarlet Witch’s brother was played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, but the Quicksilver that greeted Scarlet Witch in WandaVision wasn’t him. Instead, it was Evan Peters’ Quicksilver from Fox’s X-Men movies. The actor’s shocking cameo has naturally prompted all sorts of questions about what his presence in the show means not only for WandaVision, but for Phase 4 and the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole. Looking at what Marvel seems to be doing with previous Spider-Man franchises in Spider-Man 3, it seems that Marvel may be using Quicksilver to make the world of the X-Men films a separate reality in the MCU.

What Quicksilver is doing in Westview, how he got there, and what his presence in the town means for Wanda and the MCU are all huge mysteries that WandaVision managed to create in just one scene. Some may assume that his arrival is the work of Scarlet Witch and her reality-warping powers, but this is one weird element of the show that Wanda may not have engineered. Here’s why Agnes may actually be the character who made this happen, how she could have pulled it off, and what her ultimate goal could be in WandaVision.

How Evan Peters' Quicksilver Can Be In Westview

WandaVision Episode 5 - Evan Peters as Quicksilver

Since the Quicksilver that’s in WandaVision is the one played by Evan Peters, that implies that his character crossed over somehow from the multiverse. What is arguably the best explanation for Fox’s Quicksilver being in the show is the idea that the characters in the X-Men films exist in a reality that’s separate from the universe occupied by the Avengers, the Guardian of the Galaxy, Spider-Man, and everyone else.

If WandaVision’s Quicksilver is from a different reality, how can he be in Westview with Wanda and Vision? In Avengers: Endgame, the heroes inadvertently created a new timeline with their time travel shenanigans in the Quantum Realm, but getting to and from a world as far-removed as one from the X-Men films could be more complicated and may have to involve magic. It could be that it would take a character well-versed in the mystical arts like Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange to open a doorway to Quicksilver’s world.

Furthermore, Quicksilver’s arrival calls back to Monica’s comments about who and what can enter the Hex. SWORD eventually came to the conclusion that entering Westview is manageable if something doesn’t need to be changed to fit into her fake world. With that in mind, it’s important to note that WandaVision episode 5 was an 1980s-themed episode, and two of the movies that Fox’s Quicksilver appeared in – X-Men: Days of Future Past and X-Men: Apocalypse – were set in the 1980s. Unlike Taylor-Johnson’s Pietro Maximoff, Evan Peters’ version was in his prime during the ‘80s. If that wasn’t the case, he may not have been able to come to Westview.

Why Wanda May Not Have Brought Quicksilver To Westview

Pietro shows up at Wanda's home

Recent episodes of WandaVision have proven to viewers that Wanda is manipulating most of what goes on in Westview. This became clear to Vision as well when he spoke to Norm (Asif Ali), whose behavior indicated that Wanda is using her powers to telepathically control the town’s residents. However, there are signs that there are a few things in Westview that Wanda can’t control. For example, Wanda couldn’t use her abilities on the twins, who are capable of aging themselves at will. Then there’s the matter of Pietro. When he came to the door, Vision assumed – for good reason – that Wanda caused the interruption. Though this would be right in line with how she’s used her powers in WandaVision so far, she insisted to him that she had nothing to do with that, and looked genuinely surprised when she laid eyes on Pietro.

Of course, it’s not impossible that Wanda brought Pietro to Westview subconsciously, but the character appears to be controlling her powers quite well at this point. And, it’s worth pointing out that though Wanda has numerous new powers in WandaVision, opening doorways to different realities doesn’t seem to be one of them. That’s why Wanda may not be the one pulling the strings behind Quicksilver’s visit.

Why Quicksilver Could Be Part Of Agnes' Plan

WandaVision Episode 5 - Agnes Smiling

The person who brought Quicksilver to Westview may be Agnes, rather than Wanda. There have long been theories that there’s more than meets the eye with Wanda’s neighbor. One thing that makes Agnes stand out is that she kept Herb (David Payton) from telling an important secret to Vision. It does look like Agnes may have more awareness than the other characters in regards to what’s really happening in the town. Also, she’s one of the few Westview residents SWORD hasn’t identified yet, which may be because she’s someone they have no record of. As for who she might really be, there have been theories for quite a while now that Agnes is really Agatha Harkness, a Marvel Comics sorceress with strong ties to Scarlet Witch and the Fantastic Four. In the comics, she spent a lot of time in Avengers Mansion, where she taught Wanda how to better control her powers.

If Agnes is Agatha Harkness, she could have a secret purpose for being in Westview. Whatever that mission is, Quicksilver could have a role in fulfilling it. It could be discovered later on in the series that Agatha saw Scarlet Witch as a threat to reality and entered Westview with the intention of stopping her. Though Vision has expressed a capability to stand up to Wanda and resist her mental influence, Agatha could have theorized that he won’t be enough and took steps to bring in someone who can get through to Wanda. If she does indeed possess great magical powers (and the comic book version of Agatha Harkness certainly does), Agatha is one character who would have the means to bring Evan Peters’ Quicksilver into the MCU.

Due to Wanda’s deep connection to Pietro, Agatha Harkness may believe that he can shake or at least weaken the hold that she has on the people of this community. If this truly is her plan, Agnes may be the key to reverting Westview back to normal. Such a reveal could be of vast importance, because it may be what links Scarlet Witch’s WandaVision story to her highly anticipated role in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Meeting Agnes (and a person from the multiverse), and learning about magic could be what ultimately puts her in contact with the Sorcerer Supreme and sets up her next MCU storyline.
