WandaVision finally revealed its big bad in the form of Agatha Harkness. Or so it seems. Agatha has been pulling the strings in Westview when it comes to Wanda and Vision, but she might not have actually threaded them. There is very likely a greater force at work in Westview.

A lot of evidence in the series points to another culprit, and Agatha's own comic book history is at odds with her portrayal in the show so far. Things are never what they seem in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but considering all the facts, there is more going on with Agatha than has been said.

Agatha Isn't A Villain In The Comics

Agatha Harkness makes an entrance in Avengers West Coast comics.

Agatha has a very different portrayal in the comics. She is traditionally depicted as the friend and mentor of the Scarlet Witch, who taught Wanda her magical abilities. Agatha is a powerful witch who has been alive for thousands of years, going back to before the fall of Atlantis.

Agatha did play a less noble role in the matter of Wanda's children. When Billy and Tommy were revealed in the comics to be magical constructs, she erased Wanda's memory to relieve her of her grief. When Wanda finally remembered, it led to devastating comics storylines like Avengers Disassembled and House Of M.

She Doesn't Have The Power To Control Wanda

Agnes and Wanda talking in WandaVision

The Scarlet Witch has a vast array of powers and can control some elements of the Hex. Though Agatha seems to cast some kind of spell on Wanda at the end of episode seven, it does not seem that she can control Wanda's powers.

Her efforts in the series are all aimed towards getting her to first conceive and raise the kids, but she wasn't able to directly manipulate Wanda into doing so. This suggests she doesn't have the power to challenge or control Wanda, and likely wasn't the party behind Wanda's coming to Westview.

Billy Can See Through Her

Billy pets Agatha's pet rabbit, Senor Scratchy, in WandaVision.

Billy and Tommy Maximoff are also powerful in their own right. Billy makes a critical note in regards to Agatha when he's at her house in episode seven. He says he likes the house because it's quiet. Agatha is quiet, too. This seems to take Agatha off guard. It might just be for show, but that emptiness he perceives is likely real.

Agatha may not have a soul for Billy to perceive, or a consciousness, which suggests she might not be real herself. If not, she could be the construct of another powerful magician.

Señor Scratchy

A lot remains uncertain about Pietro Maximoff. He's clearly an imposter and could be another character in disguise. One possibility is Nicholas Scratch, Agatha's son from the comics. Quicksilver's odd presence at Agatha's house and the fact that Agatha's pet bunny is named Señor Scratchy are both clues that Nicholas is involved somehow.

In the comics, Nicholas was a sorcerer and eventually a villain, primarily of the Fantastic Four. He tried to use their bodies as a nexus to return his spirit to the physical world.

The Book

WandaVision Magic Book

One of the most compelling pieces of evidence that Agatha is not in control in Westview is the strange book in her basement. This tome is clearly magical in some way and glows with ominous orange energy. That is in stark contrast to the purple energy associated with her own magic.

One of the most important Easter eggs in episode seven, this book could also mean a few others could be included in further storylines, including the Book of Cagliostro from the Doctor Strange movie or the Iron-Bound Books of Shuma-Gorath and Vathelos the Blind.

The Iconography In The Basement

WandaVision Agatha Basement Icons

A lot of strange things are going on in Agatha's basement. One of them is the presence of all those vines, which might harken back to the Nexus Of All Realties, a gateway located in the Florida Everglades (with possible relevance for the series).

Another is the iconography on the walls and pillars in the basement. The face of a devil is engraved in the stone in several places in the basement. Once more, it seems to reference that the classic Marvel villain Mephisto may be making an appearance.

Where Is Dottie?

WandaVision episode 2 Dottie

Agatha isn't the only mysterious character in Westview. Another is Dottie, who has been oddly conspicuous for several episodes. She does make a blink-and-you-miss-it cameo in episode 7 when Wanda and Monica are fighting on the front lawn, but she's been MIA after the first few episodes.

While Dottie could have a connection to the Squadron Supreme in the comic books, there is also a chance that she could be the main villain behind Westview, orchestrating events as she said in episode two "for the children," who now are in Agatha's control.

The Nexus Being

Scarlet Witch and Nexus Beings from history in Marvel Comics

Agatha Harkness has a connection to a Marvel villain named Lore - who may be somewhat tied to WandaVision in the future. In the four-issue Scarlet Witch 1994 mini-series (written by Andy Lanning and Dan Abnett), Wanda is revealed to be a Nexus Being. Nexus Beings are living nexus points for all realities and dimensions and the only one can exist in each universe.

When Lore crossed over and threatening reality, Agatha was seen to fight the nexus being to protect Wanda. Agatha helping to defeat Lore could mean that she is there to help Wanda against a greater force. Wanda being a Nexus is almost certainly a factor in the series.

The Cicada

WandaVision Cicada Senor Scracthy

One of the most unnerving Easter eggs in the final moments of "Breaking The Fourth Wall" occurs in Agnes' home. A lone cicada appears on the blinds in her living room. This doesn't seem to have anything to do with Agnes but a lot to do with the Marvel villain Mephisto.

The devil-like character made his first appearance in The Silver Surfer #3 in 1968. He first appeared in the comic in the guise of a fly. Though a fly and a cicada are two different insects, the similarity is close enough to be suspicious given the other evidence.

'Ralph'

Kathryn Hahn as Agnes Agatha Harkness Agatha All Along WandaVision

The biggest clue that Agnes is not behind Westview is her often mentioned but never seen husband Ralph. It's possible that Ralph is a lie she spun to make it seem like she is a part of the Westview community, but it's equally possible that she is married or at the very least, she's in league with someone else.

'Ralph' could be the mastermind behind the entire operation, especially as the Agnes All Along title sequence shows Agnes arriving into Westview fully formed. That suggests she didn't create the Hex.
