Warning: SPOILERS ahead for WandaVision episode 8!

The revelations presented in WandaVision episode 8 create a plot hole connected to the lair in Agatha Harkness' (Kathryn Hahn) basement. The episode, titled "Previously On," is jam-packed with enthralling details to Agatha's villainous presence in the MCU. The penultimate installment for the Disney+ miniseries also documents key moments from Wanda Maximoff's (Elizabeth Olsen) past, essentially retconning Scarlet Witch's origin story. Upon explaining Wanda's motivations in building the Hex around Westview, one specific element of the series doesn't fully add up.

After Agnes fully uncovers her identity as Agnes Harkness, a powerful witch dating back to the 17th century, she showcases some of her magic. Despite her own gifted abilities, Agnes finds it necessary to learn how Wanda controls all aspects of Westview. The threatening witch then opens a gateway, forcing Wanda to relive moments of her life to find answers. The final sequence follows Wanda's attempt at recovering Vision's (Paul Bettany) body from S.W.O.R.D. before leaving empty-handed. She then drives to Westview, where Vision bought a plot of land, so he and Wanda had somewhere to settle down one day. Unable to control her emotions, Wanda unleashes her magic, manifesting a house and Vision before building a Hex around the entire town.

Based on the events in the focus of "Previously On," Wanda transforms the otherwise rundown-looking area of Westview, New Jersey, into a picturesque suburban utopia. What Agnes can't immediately figure out is how Wanda can control aspects of the Hex that are out of direct sight. Wanda essentially develops a sitcom world that runs storylines without her being fully present. Seeing as she redesigned much of the town with her magic, how is it that Agatha has a lair located in her basement? The previous episode revealed the witch's mystical den full of mysterious objects, including an ancient glowing book in Agatha's possession. However, the presence of Agatha's lair seems like a plot hole at this point of the series.

WandaVision Needs To Explain The Existence Of Agatha's Lair

Though it has been established Agatha had a hand in some of the events within Westview, the lair is treated as an existing structure. To intimidate Wanda, Agatha shows off some of her abilities like transmutation and mind control. She also reveals the basement holds a protection spell thanks to the symbols she put on the walls to prevent Wanda from using magic. At no point does Agatha mention building her own lair, indicating it was always there. While it's necessary to the plot, it seems highly unlikely Agatha's archaic hideout would have been randomly located under a suburban New Jersey house.

While there's still time to explain the existence of Agatha's lair, for now, it stands as a WandaVision plot hole. Thankfully, the series has been so mind-blowing in terms of MCU revelations that details like this will be remembered as relatively insignificant. The franchise could always revisit the mysterious lair hidden under Westview if future projects dive deeper into Agatha's backstory. Maybe she uses illusion spells to develop a roving lair. It would also be interesting to learn why Vision wanted to build a life with Wanda in the town of Westview in particular. Hopefully, WandaVision has more answers on the horizon, but if not, hope is not lost for logical resolutions.
