Agatha Harkness’s iconic “Agatha All Along” villain song in WandaVision originally had a completely different title. Kathryn Hahn brought the Marvel Comics witch to life in the Disney+/Marvel series, disguising herself as Westview’s resident nosy neighbor Agnes and instantly becoming a fan-favorite character. Viewers with theories about Agnes’s true identity were vindicated in the best possible way when, at the end of WandaVision episode 7, “Breaking The Fourth Wall,” she revealed herself to be the true antagonist of the series, responsible for many of the unexplained oddities plaguing Westview – including Sparky’s death and the unexpected appearance (and recasting) of Pietro.

Thanks to award-winning songwriting team Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, almost every song on WandaVision’s soundtrack is extremely memorable as Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) rapidly move through the decades, inspiring new sitcom theme tunes for each episode. “Agatha All Along” was an instant hit for audiences, however, inspiring dozens of remixes and generally taking the internet by storm.

Now, in an interview with EW's The AwardistWandaVision creator Jac Schaeffer and series director Matt Shakman have explained the development of “Agatha All Along,” revealing it originally had a different title – “That’s So Agatha.” Schaeffer praised Shakman for bringing Lopez and Anderson-Lopez onto the project, calling it a “stroke of genius.” Shakman elaborated on the development of the song and how it got from “That’s So Agatha” to the catchy villain jingle sung by Hahn that viewers know and love today. Read Shakman's full quote below:

Originally you had, 'That's So Agatha.' [That] was sort of the idea for [the song]. I remember Kristen saying, 'We've been toying around with Agatha All Along.' And we thought, great, awesome! Then we had several chats about what, exactly, Agatha had been doing all along so they could be more specific with it. Then I just remember that Munsters meets Oompa-Loompa song coming in and just being like, 'Oh my God, this is the best thing ever.'

Agatha Harkness questions Immortal in WandaVision

“Agatha All Along” certainly rolls off the tongue better – and the “Munsters meets Oompa-Loompa” combination is an integral part of the song’s witchy and villainous essence that makes it so perfectly suited to Agatha’s charm. Lopez and Anderson-Lopez identified the Munsters as one of their key influences when writing “Agatha All Along,” along with The Addams Family theme and the “Monster Mash." Embracing classic gothic and spooky influences paid off for WandaVision, helping to successfully create one of the best villain reveals in the Marvel Cinematic Universe yet.

The success of “Agatha All Along” hopefully means there's a chance of more musicals in the MCU’s future – at the very least, the song sets a high bar for any future surprise villains in later projects. With all the enthusiasm and joy surrounding "Agatha All Along," it’s great to know that the cast and creative team behind WandaVision love Agatha's villain song just as much as viewers do.
