Warning! Spoilers for Dark Nights: Death Metal #2 by Scott Snyder & Greg Capullo below.
With Batman demoralized and the multiverse on the brink of destruction in DC's Dark Nights: Death Metal, the Justice League needs a hero amongst heroes. Someone with the potential to become powerful enough to reverse all the havoc unleashed by The Joker Who Laughs. But who is capable of putting an end to the suffering? According to Scott Snyder, that's says none other than Wally West.
Before his appearance in Dark Nights: Death Metal, Wally was able to increase his power by sitting in the Mobius Chair towards the end of the Flash Forward 6 issue mini-series. Wally receives power from the Mobius Chair and residual power from Dr. Manhattan's time in the Mobius Chair, transforming him into a near-omnipotent being. His new powers allow him to sense and seek out the source of the chaos that is erupting in the multiverse. He races into the Dark Nights: Death Metal storyline in an attempt to bring an end to Perpetua's reign of terror.
Speaking with CBR Scott Snyder claimed, "the goal is to power him up so he can fight the Batman Who Laughs once and for all." When all hope seems lost, even to a hero of Batman's caliber, Wally is the one who has the capabilities to defend the multiverse from the rapidly spreading darkness threatening to engulf it. Snyder sets ups The Flash to be the hero amongst heroes. The question is: will The Flash be fast enough to help the multiverse escape certain doom?
When Wally arrives in the Dark Nights: Death Metal universe he is overwhelmed and confused by the complexity of his power, just as Dr. Manhattan was. After attacking The Batman Who Laughs with a chainsaw fashioned from the invisible jet, Wonder Woman brings Wally along with her to regroup with Batman. She explains her plan to supercharge the already powered-up Wally with energy that is being funneled to Perpetua from the original crisis event.
Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo have raised the stakes exponentially in this epic series. The multiverse is left in such dire straits that even Batman questions what chance the heroes have against this current threat. After some convincing by Diana, the remaining heroes are willing to bet all their chips on Wally West. Considering The Batman Who Laughs just transformed into The Darkest Night, the ultimate Batman, is the fastest man alive too late?
