The Walking Dead: World Beyond actor Nico Tortorella teases more reveals about the mystery helicopter group that took Rick Grimes. Known as CRM, the group behind the TWD helicopter mystery has already been confirmed not to be the Commonwealth as depicted in the Walking Dead comic, but it's likely the group could serve the same purpose as the comics' Commonwealth in pushing the TV franchise's over-arching story toward a conclusion.

AMC’s original The Walking Dead first teased the arrival of CRM with brief glimpses of helicopters emblazoned with a mysterious three ring symbol before season 8 brought the concept fully into the story, as the character of Jadis (Pollyanna McIntosh) was revealed to be working with the secretive organization. Later, with help from Jadis, Rick (Andrew Lincoln) was picked up by one of the helicopters as he lay dying, setting up an eventual Rick Grimes-centered TWD movie. CRM also made its way onto Fear the Walking Dead, when Al (Maggie Grace) was captured by a member of the group named Isabelle (Sydney Lemmon).

As was already revealed in a trailer for the two-season show, the CRM group will also figure into the newest Walking Dead spinoff World Beyond. Now actor Tortorella, who plays Felix on the upcoming series, has teased during an appearance on Talking Dead (via Comicbook.com) that viewers are going to learn a lot more about the organization, saying fans for the first time are about to “get to really meet who's in those helicopters and where they're coming from." Tortorella also indicated that the new show will truly expand the TWD universe:

“I'm just so excited for everyone to get a taste of this so soon. I've been thinking a lot about this and this is gonna sound a little shady, and I really don't mean it to be at all, but I feel like Walking Dead and Fear deal with this universe in local news, and right off the bat with World Beyond, we're dealing with national news."

It has not yet been revealed exactly what “CRM” means, but it’s assumed to be an acronym standing for three different communities that have come together to mutually defeat the zombie scourge and rebuild civilization (the group’s three ring symbol also represents the concept of different communities coming together). World Beyond’s Nebraska university setting is one of the three communities in CRM, as is a different community that’s expected to be fully introduced in the Rick Grimes movie (whenever it arrives). World Beyond only begins in Nebraska however, as the show involves a group of young survivors leaving the safety of their community to venture across the zombie-blighted country on an dangerous journey.

It remains to be seen exactly how the new spinoff will add to what viewers already know about CRM, but the arrival of the group may mark the true beginning of the end of the whole larger Walking Dead story. As both TWD and Fear have felt stuck in a holding pattern for many seasons, it’s definitely arguable that Robert Kirkman, Scott Gimple and company should have begun weaving together the threads leading to resolution a long time ago. When it debuts on April 12, 2020, it seems The Walking Dead: World Beyond is set to push the larger story forward at least a little, which is definitely good news for a zombie franchise that has begun to smell of decay.
