The Walking Dead comic series featured numerous deaths and different fates than characters from the popular television series of the same name. In its final chapter, it's revealed who survived the series as the zombie apocalypse continues, with some familiar faces making it to the comic's end.
The Walking Dead comic book by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard was a massive hit for Image Comics, running 193 issues before the series unexpectedly ended in 2019. The comic has been adapted into a live-action television series on AMC with two spinoffs, a web series, multiple video games, and a series of novels. While the franchise isn't at the height of its popularity as it once was, it still has a massive audience, with the show's 11th season will air in 2021 and the show concluding the following year.
The comic's universe is much different than fans of the television series are used to, as characters like Carol Peletier and Judith Grimes were killed earlier in The Walking Dead's run. Meanwhile, Daryl Dixon only exists on the TV series and doesn't have a comic counterpart. But there are still a number of characters who made it to the end of the comic. In the series final issue Carl Grimes and Sophia Peletier are both alive and living in the Commonwealth with their daughter Andrea - where Maggie Green is president.
The blade-wielding Michonne becomes a judge for the High Commonwealth and ultimately helps clear Carl's name after he's tried for killing Hershel II's walkers, who were bizarrely part of his traveling show. Negan fittingly lives as a recluse, with Carl helping him with supplies. Eugene Porter also makes it to the end, as he helps build a railroad. Meanwhile, the likes of Princess, Dwight, Aaron, Jesus, also are shown to be among the survivors (as well as some more minor characters) by the end as the zombie apocalypse continues, albeit under much safer circumstances in the Commonwealth.
So what about the fates of some other fan-favorite characters? Sadly, Rick Grimes ultimately dies in issue #191, as he's killed by the son of Governor Pamela Milton. Morgan is killed after being bitten by a zombie and bleeds out and Abraham is killed by Negan midway through the comic. Much like the television series, the cast of characters constantly changes meaning there were few key survivors when the last story was told. Still, all things considered, Carl, Sophia, Maggie, Negan, Michonne, and Eugene found a way to keep on in a doomed world and were ultimately alive by the conclusion of issue #193. No character was safe in the Walking Dead, which makes the survivors reaching the end of the series that much more impressive.
