Warning: Spoilers for The Walking Dead season 11, episode 24

Several mysteries were left unsolved by The Walking Dead’s final season. In addition to wrapping up a number of loose ends, The Walking Dead series finale provided some much-needed reveals, including details about what happened to Rick and Michonne. However, a number of the lingering questions from previous seasons weren’t addressed at all.

The Walking Dead series finale’s setup and the franchise’s future make it clear that AMC does indeed have some answers planned. How Daryl gets to France, what Rick has been up to since he was abducted by the CRM, and how he’ll get to reunite with his children are all matters that are sure to be tackled by the upcoming Walking Dead spinoffs. There are other mysteries, though, that may or may not fit directly into any of the three new shows. There was some expectation that a few would be dealt with by season 11, but that ultimately was not the case. Here’s every mystery left unsolved by The Walking Dead series finale.

What Alliances Did The Commonwealth Have?

Lance Hornsby in The Walking Dead season 11 with a scar on his face

Lance Hornsby sparked all sorts of speculation when he tried to inspire fear in the main characters by bringing up “certain alliances” that the Commonwealth currently has in The Walking Dead’s world. According to him, Lance Hornsby’s death will trigger a conflict with these so-called allies, whomever they may be. When this comment was made, it was widely assumed that by the end of the series, the identity of the Commonwealth’s secret allies would be exposed, but such a reveal never actually happened. As for who he may have been referring to, the leading theory is that the Commonwealth was in league with the CRM.

Though The Walking Dead has ended, a chance still exists for the franchise to explore Lance’s ominous warning. The Commonwealth doesn’t have any confirmed appearances on the horizon, but a CRM connection could be relevant to the story of Rick and Michonne’s spinoff. In fact, it may be how the couple eventually gets back to their family and friends after the spinoff.

What Was Designation 2?

Commonwealth soldier in Walking Dead

In The Walking Dead season 11 part 3, it was discovered that some of the people sent on the Commonwealth’s train were labeled “Designation 2.” The meaning of this code phrase was discussed, but never fully explained. As one Commonwealth soldier put it, prisoners classified as “Designation 2” are sent somewhere “far away.” Whatever their destination is, it appears to be an alternative to labor camps like Outpost 22. Similar to Lance Hornsby’s “certain alliances” line, this could have been a nod to the CRM. If the Commonwealth is connected with the CRM, the nature of their partnership may revolve around human trafficking. Lance could have been giving them people the CRM deemed useful.

Is Heath Alive Or Dead?

Walking Dead Heath Corey Hawkins

It’s been years since Heath vanished in a season 7 episode, and even now, his exact whereabouts are still unknown. Clues have been offered, but there’s no telling if he’s alive or dead. It’s no secret at this point that Heath was taken by the CRM. Not only was his van spotted at the home of Jadis (a known CRM contact), but showrunner Angela Kang confirmed the connection. If Heath actor Corey Hawkins does rejoin The Walking Dead universe, opportunities to revisit him should arise in one of the three spinoffs.

That’s not hard to imagine, especially when considering that the CRM will be important to Rick and Michonne’s show and may be a part of Daryl Dixon’s story as well. Either way, it could be revealed that like Rick Grimes, Heath was kept alive by the CRM as one of its workers. Alternatively, they may find out that Heath died in an escape attempt or was one of the many test subjects who didn’t survive the CRM’s zombie virus experiments. This would be a disappointing resolution to the story, but at least it would provide an answer to a long-running mystery.

What Does The PPP Card Mean?

Walking Dead Tara PPP Card

In the same episode where Heath vanished, The Walking Dead created a second mystery when it featured a glimpse at a card with the letters “PPP” written the front. Tara found it at the site of Heath’s disappearance. Since Heath was taken by the CRM, it presumably has connections to the organization but its full meaning remains one of The Walking Dead’s biggest secrets. While that was a long time ago, the franchise certainly hasn’t forgotten it altogether. Another PPP card showed up in a Tales of the Walking Dead episode. It was seen in the belongings of Davon, an amnesiac survivor with possible CRM ties.

What Happened To Oceanside?

Cyndie from Oceanside in The Walking Dead

It was said in The Walking Dead’s penultimate episode that the people of Oceanside were victims of an assault launched by the Commonwealth. Luke and Jules survived long enough to meet up with the main characters, but the fate of the community as a whole was left up in the air. Oceanside never appeared again, which led to the impression that the Commonwealth wiped them out. But, Eugene’s remark in The Walking Dead series finale about looking forward to a swim at Oceanside has put this belief in doubt.

What About The Zombie With The Knife?

Cassady McClincy as Lydia in Walking Dead

For its final batch of episodes, The Walking Dead shocked its protagonists by bringing back season 1’s smarter and faster zombies. One particular walker featured in season 11 picked up a knife dropped by Lydia. The implication was that the zombie, now armed with a weapon, had the means to kill off a key character on the show. However, that didn’t come to to pass, and the zombie in question never made a second appearance. In spite of all the zombies they fought in the last few episodes, none of the Alexandrians came across a knife-wielding walker.

Where Did Variants Come From?

Zombies as seen in The Walking Dead series finale

The presence of the variant walkers created some complications for the final battle in The Walking Dead series finale, but no attempts were made to explain their origins. The characters have expressed their dismay when seeing these zombies, but they haven’t dug any deeper into where these zombies come from. Unless the virus has somehow evolved naturally, it may be that their sudden arrival on the show is linked to whatever incident transpired in the lab in France in The Walking Dead: World Beyond’s ending. But even if that is true, that wouldn’t account for the zombies being in the vicinity of the Commonwealth. Theoretically, the explanation for all this could be laid out when Norman Reedus’ character makes the trip to France in Daryl Dixon.
