In anticipation of The Walking Dead season 9 premiere, AMC released new photos from the episode scheduled to air on October 7th. The show released the first season 9 trailer at Comic-Con International in July as well as several photos, both of which revealed important details about what fans could expect come the fall.

One of the biggest and most obvious takeaways was confirmation that the show would jump ahead two years in time after the conclusion of All Out War following the trajectory of the comics. While TWD is inextricably tied to its source material, it's also shown a willingness to abandon certain aspects of the comics as well as improvise new characters and storylines. But the trailer showed several different signs of progress within the communities as well as Maggie's baby, who looked to be about a year old. The other major revelation from the trailer occurred at the very end when audiences got their first glimpse of the Whisperers, some of the most popular antagonists from the comics and an element TWD had yet to confirm they would adapt.

Now fans have even more material to whet their palates as AMC has released a new round of photos from the season 9 premiere that shed more light onto the changes that occur in the two year jump. Some of them confirm what we already knew -  a team of people go to D.C. to pillage now necessary pre-industrial machinery like covered wagons from museums and the like, and Rick attempts to bring the Sanctuary into the fold. But there are also new developments like Ezekiel and Carol's romance and the first real glimpses of characters Eugene, Rosita and ex-Savior Alden (Callan McAuliffe).

EUGENE CAROL EZEKIEL RICK IN THE SANCTUARY ON THE WALKING DEAD

ROSITA ON THE WALKING DEAD

The photo in the Sanctuary looks ominous and could indicate some of the strife implied by the shot of Negan loyalist graffiti shown in the trailer. Maggie's determined position at the head of a pack of Hilltoppers could also indicate some early friction, though it's too early to speculate on exactly what that may be. Rosita's spray painting a letter "B" on a road sign initially might have looked like she was marking the way to a new community, but no communities in the current federation begin with "B," and the letter "A" is the TWD's mysterious letter of choice.

Base on these photos, there are some tepid conclusions we can draw based on what happens in the comics. Unfortunately, they're not great. Ezekiel's very prominent in many of these images, and his romance with Carol has not only been announced ahead of the premiere, but now explicitly shown. In the first issue of the comics post All Out War, Ezekiel's in a relationship (albeit a vexed one) with Michonne whom he visits in Alexandria. On his way out, he's killed by a Whisperer in a murder that heralds the upcoming Whisperer War, and sets up a bit of a murder mystery because they don't discover the Whisperers until later.

Given how much attention Ezekiel's getting in just the photos from the premiere, it's possible that attention could foreshadow the character's death - in which case, perhaps Rosita's spray painting a "Beware" as a warning to others who might wander into the same unfriendly territory Ezekiel did. If the show follows the trajectory of the comics - which we've already established it does only at its pleasure - fans will have more to sink their teeth into than covered wagons and Maggie's baby come the season premiere.
