The Walking Dead Artwork Teases the Return of Season 6

A promotional image for The Walking Dead has been released, teasing a larger world for our heroes to explore when season 6 resumes in February.

The Walking Dead Season 6 - Mid-season finale

[SPOILERS for the first half of The Walking Dead season 6 ahead.]

AMC's The Walking Dead remains one of the biggest hits on television, and fans are eagerly awaiting its return after the midseason finale in November. Though the slow boil of the finale wasn't loved by all fans, the episode's escape from the walkers and stringer at the end left many impatient to see what comes next.

When we left the cast of The Walking Dead, the main crew was attempting to escape Alexandria using walker ponchos like they used in Atlanta. Carl has covered Judith under a poncho, Sam is calling out to Jessie (potentially blowing their cover) and... fade to black. A stringer closes out the episode with Daryl, Abraham and Sasha being blocked by a motorcycle gang that makes them give up all of their gear; they are informed that what they had now belongs to Negan.

Amid other teasers leading up to next month's premiere, AMC has released a new preview image for the second half of The Walking Dead season 6. The new pic (see below) gives fans glimpses of scenes to come, and teases a larger world for our heroes to explore. According to showrunner Scott M. Gimple:

“This image gives a look at tiny pieces of a larger world our group is about to discover. In the new world, they'll find hope, possibility, tragedy and the terrifying cost of change.”

The Walking Dead a larger world season 6 return

The new picture doesn't reveal the aftermath of the midseason finale, but instead shows us a glimpse of other things to come. We see a close-up of Rick (Andrew Lincoln), a cross or rosary, a walker wearing a wedding band, another walker handcuffed, Morgan riding a horse and a pair of bloody hands in a tender embrace. There are also more vague images such as smoke on the horizon, a satellite dish and an RV. Along with the images, it also gives us the concept of "a larger world" to consider... it could refer to the cast being on the run again after the fall of Alexandria and physically exploring the world, or it could be a reference to more characters coming into the mix.

There's speculation about what some of the images could mean. The cross, for instance, could be a reference to the coming of Jesus (aka Paul Monroe, who's already been spotted on set played by Tom Payne), while the clasped hands could be a reference to Glenn and Maggie being reunited. Morgan on the horse and the RV both seem to call back to the beginning of the show, perhaps suggesting a return to the cast being on the move instead of having a questionably safe place to stay. The wedding ring might tease a return of someone from the past, either a former cast member who was killed or a loved one of one of the cast who was lost during the outbreak.

This is only the latest of teases from The Walking Dead, and some of its mysteries likely won't be made clear until the show returns next month. Until then, we can expect more images and trailers that will give us glimpses of this "larger world" and the looming threat that is Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). For Glenn's sake, let's hope he doesn't bring his bat.
