AMC's hit zombie drama The Walking Dead will be returning to our screens very soon for a fifth season of blood, guts and angst, after the season 4 finale left most of the main characters at the mercy of the sadistic inhabitants of Terminus. Season 5 will offer new directions for the group of survivors as scientist Eugene Porter promises a cure to the zombie virus if he can be safely escorted to Washington DC, but getting there is easier said than done.
Rick Grimes has picked up plenty of new friends on his quest for survival, and the current cast includes members of the original Atlanta group, people from the Greene farm, Woodbury survivors and other who have been drawn to the group one way or another. In the latter half of season 4 all of these characters were scattered and had to be reunited through a series of disjointed narratives; the season 4 finale brought most of them together, though Beth has been taken away by strangers and Carol, Tyrese and baby Judith are still on their own.
Between the trailers and promotional stills for The Walking Dead's latest season that have been released, we already know that it won't be long before Carol, Tyrese and Judith join up with the rest of the group. Since you can never have too many pictures of The Walking Dead's cast standing around looking serious, however, here is a whole new batch of promotional pictures for the show's fifth season.
The Walking Dead season 5 will introduce Seth Gilliam (The Wire) as Father Gabriel Stokes, and Andrew J. West , Alanna Masterson and Christian Serratos have all been promoted to series regulars. West plays Gareth, the leader of Terminus who appears to be the primary antagonist for season 5. Those who have been following the comic books as well as the TV series will know that there's no guarantee that the plots will go in the same direction, though we can expect to see certain memorable characters and shocking moments in the near future. AMC has also released a new synopsis for the season that teases some of the events to come.
Season Four of The Walking Dead ended with Rick and the group outgunned, outnumbered, and trapped in a train car awaiting a grim fate. Season Five picks up shortly thereafter. What follows is a story that weaves the true motives of the people of Terminus with the hopeful prospect of a cure in Washington, D.C., the fate of the group's lost comrades, as well as new locales, new conflicts, and new obstacles in keeping the group together and staying alive.
Stories will break apart and intersect. The characters will find love and hate. Peace and conflict. Contentment and terror. And, in the quest to find a permanent, safe place to call home, one question will haunt them…After all they've seen, all they've done, all they've sacrificed, lost, and held on to no matter what the cost...Who do they become?
The cast may be large and sprawling right now, but don't be surprised if quite a few characters bite the bullet this season in order to trim the story back down to a core group. In other words, try not to get too attached to anyone.
The Walking Dead returns for season 5 on Sunday, October 12th, 2014 @9pm on AMC.
