In the post-apocalyptic America featured in The Walking Dead where the dead have risen, those left alive must stay alert and vigilant - “Never let your guard down” - against both zombies and humans alike. In its first four seasons, The Walking Dead has primarily focused on the core characters, Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and his group, as they attempt to find a safe place to make a life for themselves. After parting ways midway through season 4, the group finally reunited in the finale at Terminus.
Now, the season 5 premiere will find Rick and his friends still dealing with the leader of Terminus, Gareth (Andrew J. West), and his possibly cannibalistic residents, but with an additionally important mission of going to Washington D.C. The mission provides new hope for the characters as well as the viewers.
New promo photos of The Walking Dead’s main characters - Grimes, Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus), Michonne (Danai Gurira), Carol (Melissa McBride), Glenn (Steven Yeun), and Maggie (Lauren Cohan) - have been released ahead of season 5. They seem to reflect that new hope with light shining through darkness.
Though Rick and his group’s main goal has often been finding a place to sleep safely, their new mission sends them to Washington D.C. with Dr. Eugene Porter (Josh McDermitt), who hopes to cure the disease causing zombies to roam the earth.

Although The Walking Dead has broached the subject of a cure before, it hasn’t been addressed in recent seasons as the characters focused more on day-to-day survival. At the end of season 1, Rick and his group at the time broke into the headquarters of the Centers for Disease Control and their hope of a cure was squashed. Since then, they haven’t had much hope for a cure for the zombie plague, until Glenn stumbled upon Dr. Eugene Porter (Josh McDermitt) last season.
For viewers who grew tired of the single-minded goal of the past few seasons, the new turn of events on The Walking Dead should reinvigorate the series. Though it’s highly doubtful that Rick, his group, and the doctor will make it to Washington D.C. without incident (the show is known for including violent events that derail the character’s plans) it at least offers a new kind of story to entertain fans.
Whether the new hope pans out in an interesting manner, however, won’t be seen until season 5 premieres.
The Walking Dead returns for season 5 on Sunday, October 12th, 2014 @9pm on AMC.
