'Walking Dead' Season 5: Fall of Terminus, Rise of Negan

At this point, it's almost a drill: every single season The Walking Dead showrunners promise us that things are going to get bloodier and crazier than the previous season. In the case of season 5, however, that might actually turn out to be true.

The trailer for this upcoming season showed a pretty dark and drastic turn, as Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and his band of survivors are thrown out on the open road, seemingly under duress by the shady inhabitants of Terminus as they journey to Washington D.C., where Dr. Eugene Porter (Josh McDermitt) can hopefully cure the zombie plague.

In the featurette above, stunt coordinator Monty Simons describes how there will be a grander scope to season 5, and if you watch the trailer below, you can see what he means.

Judging from the set footage in the stunt video, and the footage in the trailer, it seems that Terminus isn't going to remain a safe haven for very long. Walking Dead season 5 could arguably deliver the biggest set piece we've seen in a premiere since Frank Darabont's big highway zombie attack from season 2. Explosions y'all!

Of course, the journey to D.C. will be the plot point that propels us into season 5, but we also know that the show could introduce a new big bad in the form of Negan. Readers of the comics know Negan as an even worse monster than the governor (think sociopath to the Governor's psychopath), as well as his "girl" Lucille, a baseball bat wrapped in barbed wire.

Negan on Walking Dead TV Show

Like most things in The Walking Dead, that simple description betrays the unspeakably depraved true nature of the character - but according to executive producer David Alpert, it's depravity they can't wait to introduce to the show. In speaking with AMC Blog, Alpert shared the following:

Q: What one element from the show do you wish was in the comic?

A: It’s more like things in the comic that I can’t wait to get to. I cannot wait until we introduce Negan. He is just like the coolest f—ing character on the planet. You thought the Governor was bad news?

Q: Negan’s worse?

A: [Laughs] Man, wait until you meet Negan! He’s one of the greatest villains ever created. It’s so exciting.

While Negan is a destination that many fans want to arrive at, there is no need to rush it. At the current moment, we still have to get to know the enigmatic (and creepy) Terminus leader, Gareth (Andrew J. West) and his band of sadistic and (possibly) cannibalistic followers. Should keep us busy.

The Walking Dead season 5 premieres on Sunday, October 12 @9/8c.
