October may seem like a ways away – but eager fans were treated to a sneak peek of the new poster for the upcoming third season of AMC’s The Walking Dead. With Comic-Con 2012 just around the corner, AMC is slowly giving us a closer look at the mysterious Michonne and the ruthless Governor.
The new darker toned poster features the katana wielding Michonne on one side with her chained zombie companions and the beguiling Governor on the other with his hand appearing to be extended in friendship. As fans of the comic series know The Governor arises as a new hope for the survivors until his true malignant intentions are revealed – but the most foreshadowing feature of this poster might be the less polished Rick himself, whose comic book counterpart's run-in with the Governor left a lasting impression.

While most of the major season three info is expected to come from next week’s The Walking Dead Comic Con panel, we do know the show returns for its 16-episode third season in October and will feature the much-anticipated return of fan-favorite Merle Dixon (Michael Rooker) as well as some big changes for young Carl (Chandler Riggs) with executive producer Glen Mazzarra even calling him a “child soldier.” Mazzara recently had this to say about the start of season 3:
“The entire landscape has fallen to zombies. The entire world has collapsed, the apocalypse has taken over, the zombies have taken over, there’s no safe place. And I think in the past our characters thought they could find some safe harbor, and now there’s just no good hiding place at all.”
This year’s Walking Dead comic-con panel will officially introduce Danai Gurira as Michonne and David Morrissey as The Governor as well as feature the majority of the current cast. Those lucky enough to be there will be treated to not only an in depth Q&A session but an official sneak preview trailer of season 3. If you can't make it to the panel, stay tuned to Screen Rant for liveblog coverage as well as other behind-the-scenes info.
