The Walking Dead season 11 teaser confirms an August release date. The eleventh season of AMC’s zombie drama will in fact be the last, it was revealed last September. The Walking Dead season 10 itself just wrapped up with the last of six bonus episodes made after COVID restrictions led to adjustments in the show’s production schedule.

Though these six season 10 bonus installments were greatly scaled down compared to your average Walking Dead episode, they still managed to set a few things up for season 11. The final episode indeed directly set up a coming confrontation between Maggie and Negan, as it showed the former bad guy returning to Alexandria after a brief exile to a lone cabin in the woods. Maggie’s return to the show also brings the arrival of new villains in the form of The Reapers, who were teased in episode 17. Meanwhile, episode 20 gave fans another taste of the long-awaited Commonwealth, as the story dealt with Princess’ captivity at the hands of the mysterious militarized group.

The Commonwealth indeed will be a major part of season 11, as teased again by a just-released new video from The Walking Dead. The same video also confirms that the eleventh season premieres on August 22, 2021. In addition, the clip teases the arrival of a major new character familiar to fans of the Walking Dead comics. See the clip in the space below:

This new teaser creates a decidedly sinister vibe as it features a series of settings, all empty of people, while voice-over plays of someone being interrogated by a man with a deep and authoritative voice. That voice indeed is presumed to belong to Mercer, the Walking Dead comic book character set to arrive in season 11, with Michael James Shaw announced in the role. In the comics, Mercer is a Commonwealth soldier known for his distinctive red armor who develops a relationship with Princess. The new teaser clip indeed contains a shot of red armor, almost certainly Mercer’s, hanging in a locker.

Given the way things played out in the final episodes of season 10, the new season will likely see Princess, Ezekiel, Yumiko and Eugene encountering Mercer and undergoing a grilling of the type depicted in the new teaser. If the Commonwealth functions anything like in the comic books, there should be more big developments throughout the season, including the arrival of the group’s iron-fisted leader Pamela (no casting news has yet been announced about Pamela). Of course, the show can’t truly do justice to the comics’ version of the Commonwealth as key characters involved in that storyline like Rick Grimes and Michonne are no longer present. The TV version of The Walking Dead has however set up a possible war storyline for the Commonwealth, as it’s introduced a second sinister military organization in the CRM. All this presumably will move the larger storyline closer to other developments already teased in The Walking Dead universe, ultimately tying everything in to the promised Rick Grimes movie on the horizon.
