The Walking Dead reveals its intense and shocking season 11 trailer as part of Comic-Con@Home 2021. The eleventh season of AMC's iconic zombie drama will be its last, but at least the show is going out with a planned bang, as the final season is set to run for 24 episodes spread over three segments.

The first of those 24 final Walking Dead episodes, entitled "Acheron: Part I," sees the denizens of Alexandria facing a food shortage, which leads to a dangerous supply run to the ruined metropolis of Washington, DC. Maggie, Negan, Daryl and the gang soon find themselves trapped in a subway where nerves begin to fray. In episode 2 "Acheron: Part II," while Daryl searches for a missing Dog, Eugene, Yumiko, Ezekiel and Princess find out more about their mysterious captors the Commonwealth. AMC has of course already given fans their first taste of Commonwealth military leader Mercer and his signature red armor.

AMC has now dropped a full trailer for The Walking Dead season 11 as part of the show's Comic-Con@Home 2021 panel. Among other things, the trailer teases coming conflict with the masked Reapers, with Maggie herself having to don a Whisperers mask at one point. There's also some action with the Commonwealth including a glimpse of Yumiko in Commonwealth armor. See the intense clip in the space below (trailer begins at the 1:45 mark):

The Walking Dead's flagship show may be wrapping things up but of course the overall Walking Dead universe has plans to continue on well into the future. Both Fear the Walking Dead and The Walking Dead: World Beyond are already carrying the TWD flag on TV, with more spinoffs in the works including a Carol and Daryl show, the anthology-style Tales of the Walking Dead, the submarine-set digital series Dead in the Water and - somewhat bizarrely - a comedic Walking Dead show. There are also those Rick Grimes movies that were announced back in 2018 and teased at Comic-Con in 2019. Though there hasn't been any solid news about the status of the movies in quite awhile, Walking Dead producer and episode director Greg Nicotero recently said that the trilogy is "still alive" and he's even read some scripts. Rick Grimes actor Andrew Lincoln recently expressed optimism that work will begin soon and said he's excited to put on Rick's cowboy boots again.

Everything currently going on in The Walking Dead universe is of course leading to those Rick Grimes movies, which seem they will be the true culmination to the sprawling story begun on the original AMC show way back in 2010 and played out over the last decade through multiple avenues. Season 11 will put a lot more of the puzzle pieces in place ahead of the movies, but of course with 24 episodes to air, it will still be a long time before the picture becomes clear. The Walking Dead season 11 arrives on AMC on August 22, 2021, but drops on AMC + a week earlier on August 15.
