The Walking Dead season 11 trailer debuts Commonwealth military leader Mercer and his signature red armor. The mysterious group of communities called the Commonwealth was a major factor in the latter part of the original Walking Dead comic book series. But it took until season 10 for the TV show to finally bring in their version of the powerful post-apocalyptic group.

The Commonwealth in fact has still not been properly introduced on The Walking Dead but has only been teased. The first hints of the mystery group arrived when Eugene made contact via radio with a woman named Stephanie and agreed to a meeting. But Eugene and his small crew, including new friend Princess, soon regretted their decision to meet up with this stranger when they were captured by a gang of heavily armed and armor-wearing men. Walking Dead season 10’s extended run of episodes added only slightly to its depiction of the Commonwealth, mostly showing Princess dealing with being imprisoned by the group, with season 11 sure to flesh things out more fully.

Michael James Shaw plays the show’s version of the Commonwealth soldier Mercer, who in the comics leads the organization’s military and eventually becomes a love interest for Juanita. Mercer is distinguished from the other Commonwealth troops by his red armor, a feature that is being carried over to the show. The character is yet to debut on the show but he should be set to appear early in season 11. The recently released synopses for The Walking Dead season 11 episodes 1 and 2 in fact tease plenty of Commonwealth action, with episode 2 focusing on Yumiko confronting her captors and putting her and Eugene, Ezekiel and Princess in peril.

Beyond Mercer’s appearance there isn’t much going on in the newest season 11 trailer when it comes to reveals. Essentially a series of motion posters, the clip features all the familiar Walking Dead characters in various environments. The clip ends with everyone getting their weapons ready as if a war is coming, teasing imminent combat with Mercer and his Commonwealth troops. It remains to be seen what other Commonwealth characters from the comic books will make their way to the show, but it’s likely fans will eventually be introduced to the group’s leader Pamela Milton and her son Sebastian. The Walking Dead season 11 premieres on AMC on August 22, 2021.
