A dramatic new The Walking Dead season 10 trailer teases a showdown between Negan and Maggie. Ever since Negan took Glenn’s life in the Walking Dead season 7 premiere episode, the show’s fans have been waiting for Maggie to have her chance at revenge.

Of course Maggie had many chances to avenge the death of Glenn during the literal years Negan was imprisoned in Alexandria, but despite her bitterness over Rick’s decision to let Negan live, she never availed herself of the opportunity. Later after Maggie actress Lauren Cohan left The Walking Dead to pursue other projects, it seemed fans would never get the showdown they were longing for. Then during Maggie’s absence Negan was released from jail and embarked on something of a redemption arc, becoming Carol’s own instrument of vengeance against Alpha. Now with Maggie back in the Walking Dead fold, the whole idea of Negan being embraced as a good guy has become much more complicated.

Indeed many fans are now hoping that with Maggie returning to the show and Negan free, justice for Glenn may finally be on the table. A new trailer for The Walking Dead season 10 in fact plays upon these hopes by teasing that the long-awaited showdown between Negan and Maggie may be about to happen. Negan and Maggie will of course both figure heavily in the run of Walking Dead season 10 bonus episodes set to kick off later in February. According to previously released episode synopses, in the first of the new episodes “Maggie has returned with a story she is not ready to share, even when her past catches up to her.” In the same episode “Negan's safety is at stake again.” That combination of events certainly sounds like something goes down between Negan and Maggie. However, in a later episode “Carol takes Negan on a journey, hoping to minimize the increasing tension.” So clearly, whatever happens between Negan and Maggie only creates tension but does not lead to Maggie actually killing Negan.

In fact it seems Negan definitely survives the events of season 10’s remaining episodes, as Jeffrey Dean Morgan recently posted images of himself reading a script for season 11. What actually will happen with Negan is anyone’s guess, as the show is set to explore his backstory and likely set the stage for his exit. Recent speculation indeed has centered on the possibility of Negan ultimately dying not at Maggie’s hands but at those of her son Hershel. In the comics of course, Negan is never killed but is allowed to go off into exile alone.

Though it doesn’t seem that the next run of six Walking Dead season 10 episodes will actually see Maggie killing Negan, it’s fairly certain they’re about to have some kind of run in that creates heightened tensions, perhaps setting up Negan’s death in season 11. On the other hand, this could all be a tease in the truest sense, meaning Maggie and Negan’s “showdown” will come to nothing and Negan will ultimately be allowed to live with Glenn never being avenged. The Walking Dead season 10 returns to AMC on February 28, 2021.
