When will The Walking Dead season 10 release and what will the story be about? A lot has happened in The Walking Dead season 9, including multiple time jumps, several character deaths, and the introduction of new villains, not to mention Andrew Lincoln's exit as Rick Grimes. But everything that's happened in The Walking Dead season 9 is setting up an even bigger season 10 - and that phrase actually means something this time.

Following the six-year time jump, The Walking Dead season 9 introduced the Whisperers as the series' new villains, who are led by a woman named Alpha. Pushing Negan to the side, for the time being, The Walking Dead spent most of season 9 teasing things that happened in the time jump while also setting up an inevitable conflict between the Whisperers and the people of Alexandria, Hilltop, Kingdom, and Oceanside.

AMC renewed The Walking Dead for season 10 shortly before the series returned from its midseason hiatus, and that was an indicator of its continued long-term potential. But when will The Walking Dead season 10 release and what will it be about?

The Walking Dead Season 10 Release Date Info

The Walking Dead season 10 release date hasn't been set by AMC yet, but it will certainly release in October 2019. Ever since it debuted in 2010, The Walking Dead has always premiered in October, but whether The Walking Dead season 10 premieres at the start or end of October remains to be seen. That would depend on when Fear the Walking Dead season 5 ends this year. In recent years, Fear the Walking Dead and The Walking Dead have aired back-to-back, with one beginning as the previous one ends.

The Walking Dead Season 10 Story Details

Samantha Morton as Alpha and Whisperers in The Walking Dead

The bulk of The Walking Dead season 10 story will undoubtedly be about the Whisperer War, which started to take shape with The Walking Dead's fair. Even though The Walking Dead TV show doesn't strictly adapt the comic book series it's based on, it still follows the same path as Robert Kirkman's stories. So, with that in mind, The Walking Dead season 10 story should adapt the "Call to Arms" and "Whisperer War" story arcs from the comics, in which the communities prepare for another war and then dive head-first into it.

The Walking Dead season 10 will also spend some time setting up the following story arc for season 11 and beyond, which would mean a giant horde of walkers descending upon the communities as well as the inevitable introduction of The Walking Dead's Commonwealth. It's possible that this would be how Lauren Cohan returns as Maggie after the actress left The Walking Dead in an unceremonious fashion early in season 9.

All of the major characters should remain on The Walking Dead season 10 cast, but given that this series kills off and brings on new characters on a regular basis, audiences shouldn't expect some characters to return. Most notably, Danai Gurira is exiting The Walking Dead in season 10, though it's unclear if her character, Michonne, will be killed off in some way. She could ultimately join Lincoln in the upcoming Walking Dead movies, but that also remains to be seen. On the other hand, Cohan is expected to return in The Walking Dead season 10, but perhaps in a smaller role than before.
