The Walking Dead releases new season 10 poster art that puts the spotlight on long-time characters Daryl, Michonne and Carol. The comic book that inspired the franchise may have ended its run earlier this year, but AMC's zombie juggernaut shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, the network is planning even more Walking Dead content, producing a second spinoff show that details a whole new group of young survivors striking out to experience the world after the apocalypse.

Of course, TWD also plans on expanding into the realm of theatrical film, with departed star Andrew Lincoln returning to reprise the role of Rick Grimes in a new movie from comic book creator Robert Kirkman and Universal. Meanwhile, the flagship series is getting set for its tenth season, which looks to center on a war between the communities and The Whisperers (who made their brutal presence felt in season 9 through their gruesome beheading of several long-time characters). After season 9 saw the departures of Lincoln and other long-time cast member Lauren Cohan (who may in fact still return to the show in the future), season 10 will feature the final bow for Danai Gurira, who has played fan favorite Michonne since the last episode of season 2.

Though season 10 is also set to feature a lot of new characters, many of whom have already been previewed previously, the newest season 10 poster from AMC (via Coming Soon) places the emphasis on three returning characters who have been with the series longer than anyone else: Michonne, Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Carol (Melissa McBride). See the poster in the space below:

Though The Walking Dead has certainly gone through its struggles in recent years, seeing many fans jump ship for various reasons, the core characters of Daryl, Michonne and Carol have retained their popularity with audiences. For his part, Daryl actor Reedus has indicated that he wants to stick it out to the end of the series, which is great news for all the Daryl fans who've promised to revolt if Mr. Dixon ever exits. It remains to be seen if McBride's Carol, who like Daryl has been on the show since the beginning, will also remain on the series until the bitter end. Over the course of nine seasons, Carol and Daryl have undoubtedly become one of the show's most popular duos, and many fans still hold out hope that their friendship will eventually blossom into a more intimate relationship.

There's no doubt that the core characters featured above are still a huge part of The Walking Dead, and the three of them will still be together until Gurira exits some time during season 10. As for the show's numerous new characters, thus far none of them seem to stick out as real fan favorites, and only Samantha Morton's evil Whisperer Alpha has made a particularly strong impression. Perhaps Alpha's third-in-command Gamma, played by Thora Birch, will emerge from the pack in season 10 and become a new character whose story grabs the audience. Right now, TWD seems to be losing its most compelling protagonists at a fast rate, and doesn't seem to be replacing them with new ones the audience can get behind - and that could spell big problems down the road.
