A sneak peek into The Walking Dead season 10 finale reveals that a letter is what brings Maggie (Lauren Cohan) back into the story, but which character wrote the letter? Maggie, who was already known to be coming back for The Walking Dead season 11, is returning earlier than expected. AMC has released a sneak peek into the delayed Walking Dead season 10 finale after episode 15 aired, which shows Maggie returning, a mysterious character wearing an iron mask, Gabriel (Seth Gilliam) teasing the characters who may help them against the Whisperers, and more.

Maggie famously left The Walking Dead in season 9, but her exit was notably strange, as she was written off the show off-screen. It was revealed after a six-year time skip that Maggie and her son left the Hilltop to start a new community with Georgie (Jayne Atkinson), the mysterious woman from a unknown community who showed up only once back in season 8. Maggie hasn't been seen since, but the door was left open for her to return. A return became possible when Lauren Cohan's Whiskey Cavalier was cancelled by ABC. Not too long after, it was confirmed that Cohan would return to The Walking Dead as Maggie in season 11.

Fans have long speculated about how Maggie would be brought back into the fold, and the sneak peak released by AMC reveals just how that will happen. Maggie is seen reading a letter addressed to her which explains everything that has transpired since the left. Important events such as the deaths of Jesus (Tom Payne), Tara (Alanna Masterson), and Enid (Katelyn Nacon) are specifically mentioned in the note. As for who wrote the letter, a signature can't be read, but one of the victims cited in the letter is described only as "my son". This reveals that the person who left the note for Maggie is Carol (Melissa McBride), since her son, Henry (Matt Lintz), was murdered by Alpha (Samantha Morton) and the Whisperers at the fair in season 9.

Walking Dead Season 10 Carol Letter

How does Maggie find this letter that was hidden in the ground? It could be that Carol told Maggie before she left that if she ever came back and couldn't find anyone, she'd leave her a note. Regardless, Carol being the one to bring Maggie up to speed on everything that's happened makes sense, considering that many of the characters who Maggie had a prior connection to is now gone. Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) are gone, and Tara, Enid and Jesus are all dead. Maggie and Carol were friends on The Walking Dead. Some of their most memorable scenes together happened in a season 6 episode when Maggie and an unusually vulnerable Carol were captured by the Saviors.

When taking into account everything that Carol must recap for Maggie, the letter is sure to drop a bomb on her, who will return to a Walking Dead that's unrecognizable. No matter what impact it will have on Maggie, she may not have much time to react to the news, as it may fall to her to give help to her friends immediately. If Maggie isn't alone, she could have others with her who can help the people of the Hilltop, Alexandria, and the Kingdom finally put an end to Beta (Ryan Hurst) and the Whisperers. Once the Whisperers are defeated, The Walking Dead can move on to new problems, with Maggie likely playing an integral role in the stories to come.
