AMC has announced an air date for The Walking Dead season 10 finale. The episode was set to premiere as part of season 10's regularly scheduled airing, but due to the restrictions placed on production as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, work on the season 10 finale couldn't be completed in time. Instead, The Walking Dead season 10 ended its run with episode 15, "The Tower", while plans were made for the true finale, episode 16, "A Certain Doom", to air later in the year.

Though it wasn't the original plan, "The Tower" proved to be an exciting cliffhanger for The Walking Dead season 10 to leave off on. It finds the survivors holed up in an abandoned hospital as they prepare for a fight with Beta and The Whisperer horde. A few characters remain elsewhere, like the group Eugene is leading to meet Stephanie (the woman on the radio), and that means there are less people on hand to fend off the imminent attack. Luckily, Maggie is expected to make her return in The Walking Dead season 10 finale, so there is some help on the way. What remains to be seen is if Maggie and her mysterious allies will arrive in time to help Daryl, Carol, and all the survivors live through the final battle in the Whisperer War.

During The Walking Dead's virtual panel for Comic-Con@Home, it was announced the season 10 finale will air October 4 at 9pm/8c, immediately followed by the premiere of the new Walking Dead spinoff, World Beyond, at 10pm/9c. AMC also debuted an extended look at the opening minutes of The Walking Dead season 10 finale, with this latest trailer following up the reveal of Maggie's return with an additional scene of Beta readying the horde to attack. Check it out, below:

In addition to the release date and extended trailer, it was also revealed during the Comic-Con@Home panel that six new episodes are being added to The Walking Dead season 10 and will air in early 2021. This means that Walking Dead season 10, episode 16 is technically no longer the finale. Still, the episode was written and filmed as if it were the final entry in season 10, and because of that, the episode will feature a huge climactic battle to finish out the Whisperer War.

As teased in the new footage from this trailer, Beta and the Whisperer horde are at the survivors' doorstep. Not only that, but the hospital is shown to be entirely surrounded by the herd of walkers. The reason for the delay of The Walking Dead season 10 finale was their inability to complete post-production in time for airing, and that was largely because the episode was said to require extensive VFX shots. Having now seen just how many walkers the survivors will need to fight off, it sure does seem that the episode lives up to that promise. And considering that it was originally meant to close out The Walking Dead season 10 and end the Whisperer War, a monumental battle is just the sort of episode "A Certain Doom" should be.
