The Walking Dead releases the terrifying opening minutes of the mid-season 10 premiere online. Still going relatively strong on AMC in its tenth season, TWD is set to return this Sunday after its annual mid-season hiatus.

Of course, the first half of season 10 ended on a cliffhanger as Carol, Daryl, Connie, Kelly, Magna, Aaron and Jerry all fell victim to a trap laid by Alpha, winding up stuck in a cave filled with walkers (fans of course were caused to question why everyone felt the need to follow an unhinged Carol into the cave in the first place). Audiences are now left wondering if any of the trapped characters will indeed die trying to get out of the cave, or if the suspenseful ploy will wind up coming to nothing, like the infamous season 6 non-cliffhanger that saw Glenn fall off a dumpster to his seeming doom at the hands of walkers, only to make a miraculous escape thanks to the powers of fuzzy editing.

Fans will just have to wait until Sunday night when season 10 of The Walking Dead resumes to find out if the cave of walkers will claim any of their favorite characters, or if the show will pull another fast one. To whet everyone’s appetite ahead of the new episode, AMC has released the first few minutes of the Walking Dead mid-season premiere, which is aptly titled “Squeeze.” See the clip in the space below:

The clip picks up exactly where the last episode left off, with all the above listed characters trapped in the very dark cave, shining their flashlights around at the horde of hungry walkers. The camera then pans up to the cave entrance, which looks to be inaccessible from below (fans will recall that the characters all took a tumble down to a lower level of the cave after entering) where Alpha stands holding a torch. Seeing Alpha there seemingly gloating over her and the others, Carol lets out a completely understandable blood-curdling scream. Alpha then turns and exits the cave where some of her Whisperers cohorts are waiting for her. “Make sure they don’t get out,” she orders the others before dropping her torch and walking off into the woods.

So now it seems that, even if Carol and company do manage to escape the cave unscathed, they will still have several Whisperers to contend with. In addition to the cave cliffhanger, the second half of season 10 is expected to resolve a lot of other issues, including the big one involving Michonne’s long-expected exit from the show. Indeed, another recently released video teased that Michonne is headed for a bloody end, though many still think she’ll survive the show and wind up in the Rick Grimes movie that is headed for theaters.

It will be interesting to see how the cave cliffhanger itself is ultimately resolved, given how hopeless the situation seems. Hopefully, the writers have come up with a clever way to get Carol, Daryl and everyone else out of their dilemma, and won’t resort to any lame tricks like a convenient exit or some other miracle that makes the whole cliffhanger seem like a waste of time. The Walking Dead returns Sunday, February 23 on AMC.
