The Walking Dead and Punisher films producer Gale Anne Hurd is a fan of Jon Bernthal's rendition of The Punisher on Netflix. The Punisher is an upcoming Netflix TV series set in the Marvel Netflix Universe (not the official name) with the likes of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist. What separates The Punisher from other Marvel Comics characters is his skewed moral compass. Unlike most heroes, Frank Castle is willing to kill those that stands in his way.
Bernthal's Castle made his first appearance in the Marvel Netflix Universe in Daredevil season 2, and although he was only a recurring character in the first half of the season, many agree that he was easily one of, if not the best part. Though Marvel has said in the past that they've been developing a TV series centered around the character before season 2 of Daredevil, one can assume that rabid support from fans and positive critic reviews served as an added motivation for Marvel. And it seems like it isn't just regular audience members who love Bernthal's performance, but also higher ups in Hollywood.
In an interview with Cinemablend, Hurd expressed her eagerness to see the upcoming Punisher series. She says:
"Obviously, yes, and I don't think they could have found a better Frank Castle than Jon Bernthal. I am as eager to see that show as anyone, as a fan of his, and obviously as a fan of the character."
This doesn't necessarily come as a surprise as Hurd has shown in the past that she's a huge fan of thel character, having produced two different versions of The Punisher for the big screen. In 2004, Hurd produced The Punisher starring Thomas Jane as the titular character, and in 2008, she produced Punisher: War Zone, this time with Ray Stevenson as the lead. Hurd has also worked together with Bernthal in the past, on The Walking Dead series where the actor played the morally ambiguous Shane Walsh for less than two seasons. Bernthal's role in The Walking Dead really got people talking about his on-screen presence and charisma as well as his acting chops. Since then, Bernthal has been busy, even landing roles in bigger movies like The Accountant alongside Ben Affleck and Edgar Wright's Baby Driver, in which he shined, despite his limited screen time. Playing the leading man in a live-action Marvel TV Series is arguably Bernthal's biggest role to date.
The release date for The Punisher is yet to be announced as Netflix is keeping details under wraps for now. Stay tuned for more updates. The Punisher stars Jon Bernthal, Jason R. Moore, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Deborah Ann Woll, who will be reprising her role as Karen Page.
