There is no denying that season 8 of AMC's The Walking Dead has been a bit of a roller coaster, but Norman Reedus promises that the upcoming finale will make up for all those mistakes.

Starting with Rick's hopeful attack on the Sanctuary back in October's 100th episode 'Mercy', season 8 has been a run of losses for The Walking Dead. In addition to losing the Alexandria Safe Zone to Negan's Saviors, the show has waved goodbye to Chandler Riggs as Carl Grimes, and more worryingly, a large portion of its viewers as ratings have continued to tumble. However, as Scott Gimple brings his time as showrunner to a close along with the All Out War story arc from the comics, Reedus is confident that the show can return to form.

Even as the show has thinned the herd, an ever-expanding cast of series regulars means that The Walking Dead has come a long way from its Atlanta Camp survivors from season 1. Season 8 has played out with various different storylines with an almost "location of the week" style, but speaking to EW, Reedus says that all of these will come together in 'Episode 16,' aka 'Wrath':

“There are four things that happen that could be the finale, and they all go off at once at the same time. They head in different directions, and they’re all individually as good as the next, and they’re all very, very satisfying. I like that about it. I like that it’s not just one person’s story. There are probably four, maybe five, different directions that the show could’ve ended on and it went in all of them. It’s very satisfying.”

While the man behind Daryl Dixon doesn't reveal exactly which storylines he is referring to, possible candidates include Maggie struggling with her Savior prisoners at the Hilltop, the tough choices for the Oceanside community, another definite showdown of Rick vs. Negan, and the newly-introduced Georgie and hints at a time jump for season 9. Whatever happens, Reedus' words echo what Gimple previously said about the finale being "too big."

As Gimple moves to be overseer of all AMC content for The Walking Dead and Fear The Walking Dead, Angela Kang will replace him as showrunner on the main series. While Robert Kirkman's stories from the comics offer many more years of storylines for The Walking Dead, there have to be some lessons learned from the relative car crash that has been season 8. Although AMC hopes to continue The Walking Dead for decades, there is no escaping the fact that many people feel season 8 has represented a fall from grace.

Thankfully, as still the most-viewed show on network television and with enough die-hard fans to at least bring another season of the popular zombie apocalypse to our screens, it might not be too late for the shambling corpse that is The Walking Dead. Here's hoping that the promising words of Reedus and Gimple aren't just hot air and that the show really can deliver with its April 15 finale.
