The Walking Dead is set to come to an end when the eleventh season finale airs on November 20, 2022. With over a decade’s worth of events, there were bound to be some moments that didn’t have the impact that the show wanted. In fact, fans on Reddit have compiled a list of times when they believe The Walking Dead missed the mark.

These range from moments where the CGI was to blame to relatively corny dialogue exchanged between the likes of Daryl, Beth, and Rick, among others. There are also some more cringe-worthy elements, such as the introduction of seemingly cool characters that were swiftly killed off. It’s interesting how Redditors feel about these moments and the reasons why they’re filled with the cringe factor.

Daryl & Beth Flipping Off The Burning House

“Still” showed Daryl and Beth talking about putting the past behind them, but the closed nature of the story and lack of plot development wasn’t positively met by many viewers. Redditor SIXBEUD pulls no punches, claiming that it was “a stupid episode… I remember how cringe-worthy it was.”

They’ve pointed out the moment where Daryl and Beth flipped off the cabin they left burning to be the main reason to cringe. The intention was to show the pair defying what people expected of them, only to come across as rather forced and a try-hard moment that seemed satirical rather than rebellious.

The CGI Deer

“Say Yes” is a Walking Dead episode that fans rarely watch because of its slow pacing. It details Rick and Michonne’s attempts to find resources to provide for the Sanctuary, with one scene featuring Rick looking at a deer that was clearly rendered through questionable CGI.

Redditor Aero041191 writes that they “legit thought it was a cardboard cut out,” owing to the hilariously awkward way with which the deer was situated. It’s clearly not one of The Walking Dead’s finest moments since even suspending disbelief doesn’t work with ignoring how shoddy the CGI work is. Trying to make viewers believe a real deer was standing there is what got fans to consider it cringe-worthy.

Beth's Singing Moments

Although fans largely feel that Beth is a Walking Dead character who deserved to live, not many were attached to her singing sequences. The moments never added anything to the story and tended to eat up quite a bit of screentime, which made certain viewers cringe at the forced aspect of it.

Redditor Ragatrip76 thinks that the “show shamelessly threw that in 4 or 5 different times, too much.” Beth’s singing scenes also interfered with the episodes’ pacing, meaning characters had to stop what they were doing and just stare at her sing - it just didn’t seem relevant to more important things going on.

Jessie's Speech To The Community

Jessie looks through bars in The Walking Dead

Season 6’s first half is set within a day and a half, which means that everything Jessie did before she died happened immediately one after the other. After killing a walker in the house, Jessie appeared to have a newfound resolve and made a bold speech to the people of Alexandria about it.

However, she was killed half a day later, with Redditor nyradmilli thinking the speech seems really cringe-worthy in retrospect, writing that it’s “because of how soon she died after.” According to them, the moment would have been a cool change in character, yet Jessie being killed off very soon after turned her speech into immaterial speech-making.

Andrea & Shane's Hook Up

Shane yelling at Andrea in The Walking Dead

Andrea and Shane had no romantic dynamic prior to suddenly hooking up after spending a day together, and this has not been well-received by fans. Redditor euphoricjab didn’t like how they “just stared at each other until Shane said something…that was so CRINGE.”

The moment leading up to their interaction didn’t have much chemistry and viewers were quick to point it out. Moreover, Andrea and Shane had nothing to do with each other following that scene, so it was all basically for nothing that didn’t land with the majority of fans.

Glenn's Demise

Negan brandishing his bat at Glenn in The Walking Dead

The killing of Glenn was the saddest death in Walking Dead’s seventh season, taking place right in the premiere. Unfortunately, the graphic nature of it turned off many viewers from the show, with Redditor agmoos writing that they “turned [their] eyes after that one.”

It was a lot to take for many viewers, especially considering the fact that Glenn’s eye popped out for several seconds while he spoke his last words. It’s hard not to cringe or grimace while watching the brutal demise of such a beloved character and a lot of the fan base even swore off the show after the violent moment.

Introduction Of The Prison Inhabitants

It appeared as if Rick and company had come across some real threats in Tomas’ group when the prison inhabitants were first shown. However, the majority of them were soon killed off in comical ways, which makes their cool introductions disappointingly funny to watch.

Redditor katiedid05 thinks this was cringe-worthy because “they act super badass but are basically idiots.” Tomas and his men tried to make it seem like they were on Rick’s side but did a poor job at hiding their intended betrayal - Tomas himself was swiftly killed by Rick. Watching their original attitude now just seems corny.

The Attempt To Make The Protagonists Appear Evil

Paula holding Carol and Maggie captive in The Walking Dead

In “The Same Boat,” Maggie and Carol are part of Rick’s group who slaughter the Saviors in exchange for receiving goods from the Hilltop. It’s clear that the protagonists have reached low lengths to survive, but fans weren’t convinced it made them outright evil compared to the Saviors.

One of the Saviors, Paula, outright said that Rick’s group weren’t the good guys, which Redditor TomBonner1 writes, “always felt extremely forced.” It was cringe-worthy for viewers because the show basically wanted to force a narrative onto fans without letting them reach that judgment themselves. In addition, it was obvious that the episode was going for that idea, so a character actually saying it was too on the nose.

Carl & Ron's Fight

Carl and Ron fighting in The Walking Dead

The Anderson family is generally considered among the most irritating characters in The Walking Dead. Ron’s constant whining made him seem weak, yet he was somehow able to challenge Carl despite the latter being a seasoned survivor.

Redditor archangel610 found in it a cringe aspect that “all Carl could manage was a cute little shove.” The exchange between Ron and Carl seemed more like play fighting than an actual moment of conflict, with viewers annoyed that Ron even appeared as a threat when he shouldn’t have.

Oceanside Aligning With Rick's Group After The Latter Captured Them

Rick and company invade Oceanside to essentially force them into fighting the Saviors with them. They even take a few of them hostage to ensure they comply until walkers break out - the captives are then freed, with everyone teaming up.

Redditor orcaneSQ thinks none of it “was a good idea, to begin with, and the scene looked ridiculous.” The cringe-worthy aspect is twofold, as Rick’s plan made no sense and how hard to believe it was that Oceanside would suddenly become friends with Rick for freeing them when he was responsible for capturing them in the first place. All of it came across as a forced way for the story to progress into the characters’ alliance rather than being logical.
